Larry Finch was more than a terrific basketball player. He helped bring together a city in pursuit of a common cause.

I'm old enough to say I had the opportunity to see Blue Edwards play in college and his dunks were awesome, but Maurice Kemp's dunks were electric and for that reason, I choose MK.

While Hayes was probably the best college player in UH history, I love the story of Ollie Taylor.

While only 6'2", he played center at UH. He jumped center and won it almost every time, including against Kareem. Just a fun story.

Keith Lee. Soft hands and loved playing the game. Best college big man I ever saw play. Knees gave out, but he did play in the NBA for a stretch.

Elliot Perry gets my honorable mention.

Many, many others are tied for third.

I loved that Tigers squad. It would be cool to see CDR and Rose team up again in the pros.

For me, it was Herve Lamizana. I'm still shocked he never made the pros after being one of the best defenders in college basketball and a good shooter.

Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon!!!!

I grew up loving basketball and being a Houstonian through and through he was my hero. Got to see him play in Mexico City during the few years I lived there too. As I grew up, I didn't grow up as much as other kids, so while I had mastered my own "Dream Shake" I was just too short to keep playing Center and then Basketball altogether. When I decided to attend UH I learned all about Phi Slama Jama and loved that I had transferred to the right school for me! (I was studying out in the middle of the New Mexico desert before that...yikes.

mine was Clyde the Glide. Two of my favorite players ever. Would have been great to watch that Houston squad with today's media coverage.

All-time - Hakeem Olajuwon.

I forgot about Damon Jones, maybe I should insert him in.

And technically, I saw and got to enjoy championships from Hakeem and Clyde but was but a mere twinkling in my father's eye in 1984 and before (I was alive, however, by the time of the 1986 NBA Finals).

Truth be told, if I hadn't read your post first, I would've left off Aubrey. Glad I read your post first. 04-cheers

And I was technically alive for the '83 and '84 national title games, but I'm not old enough to remember ever watching either one. I do remember watching the '86 NBA Finals. I didn't necessarily understand that there would be other chances. (I was four, after all.) I was pretty sad.

Old Tiger had a great list earlier.

For Tulsa, I'd add Pooh Williamson and Michael Ruffin. Ruffin was not only an entertaining player to watch, but he was a sharp student (chemical engineering major) who kept a menagerie of animals during his time at TU as well. Some funny stories ensued.

He was a skinny freshman my jr. year. I didn't get to see him in his glory day, I was gone by then. :bang head:

Fortson was the best Bearcat I saw live.

No he isn't the only one.

Well tell me who else had a career in the NBA. I know Richmond signed with the Rockets but I wouldn't call a few months a career.

Those with several years in the NBA

Oliver Mack - 1979-1982
Theodore "Blues" Edwards - 1989-1999
Jonathan Kerner - 1998-2001

Those that were drafted

Theodore "Blue" Edwards - Utah Jazz (21st overall) 1989
Oliver Mack - Los Angeles Lakers (third pick in the second round) 1979
George Maynor - Chicago Bulls (sixth pick in the fourth round) 1979
Charles Alford - Los Angeles Lakers (ninth pick in the tenth round) 1968

Great 3 point shooter IMHO. Plus, he's a fellow Red Devil (Germantown HS). Used to watch him at our high school games.

Darius Morrow. Between his Sophmore and Junior year he flipped the switch and became a very good big man.

Kenyon was a pure joy to watch largely because of his evolution as a player. He could do so much by his senior year. Fortson was also a joy to watch. He was the epitome of everything I loved (and opposing fans) hated about UC basketball during the Huggins era. He was a bully on the court and made opposing teams feel powerless. I miss watching UC teams like that.

RE: Who is your all-time favorite player for your basketball program?
My all time favorite was Mel Levett. IMHO, No other player brought the level of excitement to UC. My favorite game was when he carried the team past Mass. in the Cleveland Classic. We had a very thin line-up to begin and days prior to the game a couple starter were suspended. Mel with the help of a couple of football players were able to lead the team past a good Mass team. A close second goes to a football player that exemplifies the word team. Not only did Conor Barwin switch to a position of need his senior year in football, he also helped out the basketball team when we had injuries. Conor was certainly not the greatest bball player, but he was serviceable and helped us win key games.
