"To compile the numbers, Brewer analyzed each program’s revenues and expenses and made cash-flow adjustments, risk assessments and growth projections for each school. The resulting figures represent what the teams might fetch if they could be bought and sold on the open market like professional teams."
This is how much the teams are worth if someone were to buy it on the market. These numbers really shouldn't surprise anyone. NIU plays in a G5 conference and doesn't pull in the big $$ like the P5 schools. I'll be THAT guy, and say that if NIU were to somehow make it to the P5, that number would skyrocket for NIU.

What's truly amazing about these numbers is how we are able to compete with the giant revenue producers that work with budgets that are 5-10 times larger than ours. For 13 years now we have lined up versus the "mega" programs and, for the most part, competed. Through efficient management and fund raising we have improved our facilities, won a lot of games and are at the top of academic yardsticks for football. As mush as we disagree on this board, this is a day, for all of us, to be proud of the program. Is anything possible if we double or triple revenues?

Well said Huskie George. And NIU's student athlete stay out of trouble. We have a football program to be very proud of.

The field have leveled more that most can perceive. There are 10-15 elite programs now, then another group of about 30 or so high level G5, decent P5. You can only have so much to offer a kid regarding facilities, education. What the top sell now is NFL and fame. The top get the elite of the elite and the after that it's only a matter of depth. I mean OSU has 3 Heisman possible QB. It's lack of depth that has let NIU compete with middle-lower tier P5. You want to ride the pines at a crappy P5 or play for a CFU, Cincinnati, Marsahll, Toledo or NIU?
And when the money trickles down to everyone, others begin to compete. That is why SEC doesn't want to share the wealth, why some P5 want to pay players. They know as time goes on the NIU's of the world are improving their facilities, getting 3* kids, even a 4*. Sure, NIU isn't going to compete yearly with Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State. But they can a Kentucky, Vandy, NC State and have Iowa, NW, Kansas and could occasionally with an Alabama. (Believe me, Alabama will do EVERYTHING to prevent ever losing to a "Northern" non p5 again) Heck, Florida lost to Ga Southern or something, UM to a MAC school and App St! And see where they went in recent years. But they will rebound.
But this doesn't help their conference. There is only so much you can do to separate yourself. They have to create new ways, their own rules to keep the peasants out of the castle.
