Dr. Faudree's wife, Patricia, was a former client of mine and I had the pleasure of meeting him on a few occasions. Very gentle man with a wonderfully humble spirit. I'm very saddened.

I took an upper level Linear Algebra class from Dr Faudree in a pre-summer sessions. 3 weeks of hell. He was a nice man.

This is terrible.

I met him by chance my graduating year through a friend. He was extremely nice and helpful. I actually ended up having a problem with an admin, and he told me to tell the person to call Ralph if there is a problem. He made sure I graduated 03-wink

He was a math genius. He helped with some difficult math problems I had, and I had no idea at the time what his credentials were. Later on in grad school, I came across a paper with his name. I had no idea his Erdős number was 1. He actually has an entry on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Faudree

I really hate to hear this. I was even more stunned when I clicked the article and it said from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

I was fortunate to to have Dr. Faudree teach my "Concepts of Numbers" class way back in 1981. He was a wonderful instructor who was brilliant, but he didn't act like he was brilliant. He was very nice and always took the time to explain the subject matter in such a way that even a "mathematically challenged" person like myself could understand. In fact, he explained things so well that I earned a B in his glass.

Dr. Faudree was a great man, a leader with vision and he brought much respect and recognition to Memphis State/The University of Memphis. He will be sorely missed.

Prayers for his family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.
