Because it's a MAC team on the road against a top 10 team and maybe the top team. You can realistically guess that it will be over 14 pts. Also, common sense says that few would bet NIU if it were under 20pts. The object of the spread is to get people to bet on both teams.

Sure it does but no matter what happens it's going to be double digits. Ohio St opens at V.Tech, they could lose that game. Ohio St plays WMU after NIU. Right know, you don't have any idea what that spread might be? and a guess at the score, outcome of that game.
