Final Coaches Poll

Marshall at 22....

Think maybe the Power Poll was leak to Marshall's final ranking, although they went up nine spots in it and six spots in Amway Poll.

Either way, good finish for school only in rankings in FCS at end of season for third time. In 1999, Marshall finished 13-0 and closed at No. 10 in the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ polls. In 2002, the Herd went 11-2, and placed No. 19 in the final coaches’ poll and No. 24 in the final AP rankings.

Woody - According to this Link Marshall was also ranked in the final 2001 coaches poll at #21. We Marshall fans feel that our 1998 (12-1) team should have been ranked but wasn't.

This coming from a troll who is a fan of a school that was kicked out of a conference for lack of on the field success and attendance. A school that didn't have a winning record from 1991-2008. Before 2008 the last time Temple had a winning record was the year I grad from HS in 1990. This coming from a troll that was demoted from the BE to the MAC and never beat a MAC program with a .500 or better record.

Besides Addazio who skipped town at the 1st chance he got and was whopping 13-11 at Temple, the last coach there with a winning record was George Makris from 1960-69.

Carry on with your pathetic program and attendance.

Yeah HerdZoned - He is talking smack to a school that has played his Temple Owls one time since turning IA in 1997. On Sept. 25, 1999 his mighty Big East Owls came to Huntington to play Marshall from the lowly MAC. The result was a 34-0 Herd ass whipping of his Owls. Perhaps he isn't old enough to remember Temple's embarrassing loss to Marshall that year.

I thought about the mighty Temple Owls as a supposed BE member in 1998 giving Marshall a 1 and Done home game after I hit reply. Temple has had more 1 or no win seasons than VMI and Charleston Southern.

Temple still has a football program? I thought they got kicked out of conference for losing seasons and no fan support and then became a basketball only school?

What is source for Coaches Poll? I can't find a final Amway poll anywhere -- oh, I see, you are looking at the USA Today Power Poll, which ranks teams No. 1-128.

It took four months, hundreds of games and a College Football Playoff, but here we stand: Beginning with team No. 1 — fairly obvious after the title game — through team No. 128, the USA TODAY Sports college football re-ranking is complete.

And without much controversy, in fact.

Ohio State's an obvious pick for the top spot after defeating Oregon 42-20 to claim the national championship. Oregon, meanwhile, slides to No. 3 after its second loss of the season. Smack in the middle is TCU, which finished 12-1 after rolling past Mississippi in the Peach Bowl.

Rounding out the top 10 are Florida State, Alabama, Michigan State, Baylor, Boise State, Georgia Tech and UCLA. In total, the Pac-12 and SEC combined for 13 of the top 25 teams; in specific, the Pac-12 South Division and SEC West Division combined for nine of the top 25.

The worst teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, per the re-ranking, were Georgia State, Idaho, Eastern Michigan, New Mexico State, Connecticut and SMU, among others.

And what of the re-ranking's success rate? We can look at it in one of two ways: one, that 16 teams were ranked in our preseason top 25, or two, that nine of the final top 25 were unranked in the preseason. Let's choose to focus on the former and ignore the latter.

1. Ohio State (14-1, 8-0) | 2. TCU (12-1, 8-1) | 3. Oregon (13-2, 8-1) | 4. Florida State (13-1, 8-0) | 5. Alabama (12-2, 7-1) | 6. Michigan State (11-2, 7-1) | 7. Baylor (11-2, 8-1) | 8. Boise State (12-2, 7-1) – UP 9 | 9. Georgia Tech (11-3, 6-2) | 10. UCLA (10-3, 6-3)

11. Georgia (10-3, 6-2) | 12. Missouri (11-3, 7-1) | 13. Arizona State (10-3, 6-3) | 14. Wisconsin (11-3, 7-1) | 15. Mississippi (9-4, 5-3) – DOWN 6 | 16. Mississippi State (10-3, 6-2) – DOWN 8 | 17. Clemson (10-3, 6-2) | 18. Arizona (10-4, 7-2) – DOWN 8 | 19. USC (9-4, 6-3) | 20. Utah (9-4, 5-4)

New to the top 25:

No. 20 Utah (No. 27). The Utes give the Pac-12 South Division yet another team inside the top 25.

No. 22 Marshall (No. 31). The Thundering Herd put together their most impressive performance of the season by taking apart Northern Illinois in bowl play.

No. 23 Memphis (No. 34). Yeah, Memphis. It won't be long before Justin Fuente draws the attention of major programs across the country.

No. 24 Stanford (No. 33). Below expectations, true, but the Cardinal will be motivated to make next season a memorable one.

Out of the top 25:

No. 26 Nebraska (No. 23). Another nine-win season with a major impact. It's on Mike Riley to change that trend.

No. 27 Louisville (No. 21). The Cardinals drop out after failing to put up much of a fight in a bowl loss to Georgia.

No. 28 Northern Illinois (No. 31). That the Huskies won another conference title while retooling behind a new cast paints a positive picture for the near future.

No. 31 LSU (No. 25). LSU loses five games for the second time in Les Miles' tenure.

Three big leaps:

No. 8 Boise State (No. 17). The Broncos were by leaps and bounds the top team from outside the major conferences.

No. 33 Texas A&M (No. 38). While it was a rocky road, the Aggies should feel somewhat positive about their eight-win finish.

No. 51 Tennessee (No. 59). A great bowl performance gives the Volunteers some juice heading into the offseason.

Three big drops:

No. 73 North Carolina (No. 65). The Tar Heels' miserable season ended in fittingly miserable fashion.

No. 53 Iowa (No. 43). Congratulations are in order for the Hawkeyes, who put forth the worst bowl performance of the postseason.

No. 18 Arizona (No. 10). To call this anything but a successful season would be ridiculous. But the Wildcats limped to the finish line with losses to Oregon and Boise State.

Thanks Woody!! Great year for Marshall and CUSA!! Look at all the teams we have that seem to be trending upward, or did better than many expected: LT, WKU, Rice, MTSU, UTEP, ODU. USM and the F_U's took a step forward. NT and UTSA should also improve. Can't wait to see how Charlotte does. The heartbreak is UAB at #82; with the way they were headed they could well have moved up 30+ spots next year.

I think Marshall should have been ranked somewhere between 13-19. And they would have been if we wasn't horrible from 2005-2010/11. Last year was getting back to respectability this year was proving they belonged again.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with where we ended up. And I do agree with HerdZoned that if we hadn't had several seasons at around 500 in the past 10 years, we would have had the "mojo" to be ranked higher. Just look at Boise State. They will be the #1 G5 team until they inevitably fall to mere mortal levels. They have a "body of work" (sorry about that phrase) over the last decade that any of us would kill for, and it matters to the poll voters. (They certainly have my respect. They are the team to chase right now.)

And congratulations to Memphis. What a turn around story by Fuentes and his staff. He won't be there long!!!

He got a new contract at $1.4 million which imho was a little low for him, but a low buyout was also negotiated which works in his favor. He's probably safe from some bottom feeder P5 teams, but the right team will come looking at some point and no amount of money will keep him.

Really? I've been following them for over a decade, and I'm surprised they finished ranked with 3 losses and no P5 wins.

I take a little issue with the comment in the article that beating NIU was our best performance. Every CUSA team we beat was a much better effort from us because it took more effort. Not to take anything from NIU, but the CUSA teams were just better and you could see it when you watched them play.

Looks like the newbie poster received a pair of balls and wanted to try them out.

CUSA size, speed, and depth > MAC size, speed, and depth

Generally speaking
