Signed up for the NAS for the first time ever, just to attend this event. And I'm already offended by the hostility/paranoia of the current leadership:

Please remember, this is an official meeting of the UAB National Alumni Society Board of Directors. It is important that every voice be heard, but discussions must be held in a respectful and courteous manner. Any disruptive outburst or disrespectful behavior will be escorted from the meeting.
No media will be allowed inside the auditorium. However, a National Alumni Society representative will be available to speak to the media at the conclusion of the meeting.
No cell phones or other recording devices will be allowed into the auditorium.

These people seem to have forgotten who exists to serve whom.

They fear a live tweet session. This behavior only further solidifies what people have been saying about the NAS.

Take your cell phones anyway. See if they frisk you. How about some transparency! Are they afraid someone will record them saying something that they will deny later? If we have video, then everyone is protected.

Heck, we have even had recent audio recordings of Watts that people heard and were able to defend what he meant.

Too much shadiness!!

I spoke with the AVP at the NAS at the event for Coach Clark. It was relayed to me that not every email/call they have received has been in a respectful manner. Due to this our original email conversation from last week started off in a similar tone as you indicated, but she went the extra mile to get us both on the same page and understands my point of view and concerns. She was also very gracious in personal conversation Saturday night.

While I cannot 100% confirm her comments since I'm not fielding them, she is related to one of my Blazers friends, then you add in the anger from Blazernation, her comments are plausible.

I understand we are all upset, we just need to ensure we're voicing things in the proper manner, which from what I have seen, we are as a whole. The way the protests have gone are probably driving the administration crazy because they have been lawful and peaceful, which makes their justification of the decisions lose credibility.

I don't really think this is inappropriate given the current atmosphere. The purpose of the meeting is to hear what the Alumni have to say. As Alumni, and graduates, I would expect comments to be in a respectful manner. I also don't think that keeping media out (who are only interested in discord) is inappropriate.

If you want a voice in how the alumni association is run, join before you need to have access to a meeting, and offer your time and talents to the University. Not blaming anyone, but if more alumni had been positively engaged (me included) and active, we may not have this mess now.

My $.02.

PS: I am a 22 year Alumni Association member and from personal knowledge there are many staff and volunteers who work very hard for our University, They are good people, and certainly not "jokes." This University is very fortunate to have such dedicated people who love their school. We just need more of them.

I agree with the philosophy that folks need to get more involved if they don't like the direction and leadership of the NAS. If leaders are nominated and elected by vote, we need more folks to get involved. Not less just because we don't like what they're doing.

Amen. I haven't been that involved because my life is busy as is everyone's and I was under the impression they were doing a good job until the administration acted the way the did on 12/2/14. Going forward I am committed to making myself more involved and strengthening the NAS. The last 6 weeks have given the NAS a huge opportunity to become stronger in numbers and influence if they choose to seize the opportunity.

I think web behavior and actual face to face meeting behavior gets confused at times, by parties putting on events and by parties attending. I don't see anything wrong with clarifying rules to begin a meeting.

However, I do think it rather infantile and at least portraying the appearance of impropriety when you tell folks, "No Phones or recording devices allowed." Then people start to repay the distrust in kind.

JMHO.

From what I hear, the past NAS presidents are furious over the decision to drop the three sports as well as the Admins lack of NAS engagement. The current board has met with them as well and is taking their feelings and comments into consideration. Should be a lively meeting no less.
