OT: DI women's lacrosse in Houston: Marquette v Hopkins on Feb 8
Marquette and Johns Hopkins will open their season on Sunday February 8 at Carl Lewis Field at UH:

As far as I know, this is the first Division I women's match in Houston. Houston hosted the women's Division II championships in 2008, and the Navy-Hopkins men's match at the Astrodome in 1971.

Do you know of any NCAA men's lax that will be played in Houston this year. I went to the Army vs. Air Force game at Kinkaid and it was a blast.

I don't know how those Kinkaid games slipped my mind :(
Currently I don't know of any DI men's games, but rest assured that I will post here if I learn of any.

Update: the game is this Sunday at 12:00 noon. The national rankings were published this week, and the Hopkins women are ranked #14 in the country in NCAA Division I.

Just a couple of blocks away, there will be a men's game at 10:00 AM that morning between UT-Dallas and Incarnate Word. This game will be at the UH intramural fields at Cullen Blvd and Elgin, just off I-45. These teams are in the second division of the national club league (Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Assn). You might recognize one of the officials on this game.

Here's a nice quote from the Marquette head coach:

Quote:"We are thrilled to help grow the game by playing an opening contest at the University of Houston against Johns Hopkins," Marquette head coach Meredith Black said. "This will be the first ever Division I women's lacrosse game in Houston and the sport is growing rapidly in Texas so hopefully this game can accelerate that growth."

Great game today! It was dead even at halftime (3-3), at the end of regulation (5-5) and at the end of the first overtime (7-7) before Hopkins scored 33 seconds into the second overtime (which is sudden death) to claim an 8-7 victory.

I'm not a great judge of numbers, but the crowd seemed to be more than a thousand. As you would expect, there was a good turnout of Hopkins and Marquette alumni, as well as seemingly every girls lacrosse team within 50 miles. There was also a group of Rice students who had come to cheer the Blue Jays -- I'm not sure what the connection was, but they were certainly into it.

After the game, tables were set up alongside the field and all the players from both teams came out to give autographs. Hundreds of kids lined up to have everything from game posters to their own lacrosse gear to backpacks and the backs of their shirts signed. It was hard to tell who enjoyed it more: the kids or the players.

On a personal note, I had the great pleasure of meeting the Johns Hopkins athletic director, who had a short but enjoyable visit here in Houston, including a tour of the Rice campus yesterday.

All of this on a warm sunny day with the downtown skyline in the background. Not bad at all.

The last photo, from the post-game autograph session, is delightful: it captures the joy on the faces of players and young fans alike.

Glad to hear the game went well.

As you may have heard, Major League Lacrosse will be playing their all star game in HOUSTON!

This is a huge deal and a wonderful chance for Houston to get exposure to Lacrosse.

It will be June 13th at BBVA.

Yes indeed. I will start a separate thread on that closer to the date.
