Callahan and Taylor - East West Shrine Game
OK everyone...don't forget to watch Bryce and JT play in the East West Game on Saturday! They are both on the West Team. Bryce is wearing #26 and JT is #12. Lets hope they both get invited to the NFL combine. You all remember how the combine helped Phillip!

RE: Callahan and Taylor - East West Shrine Game
Good read-out on Jordan and Bryce from scouts at practice from bleacher report...

—The Shrine Game tends to attract bigger receivers with polished aspects to their game, so it's hard not to have "draft crushes" on these guys when they're going against lower-quality defensive backs in practice. With greater catch radii, they can also make a number of throws that smaller slot-type guys won't make in tighter windows with less accurate quarterbacks.

This year, that guy is Rice receiver Jordan Taylor. At 6'5", 210 pounds, the guy is a beast. He looks comfortable on the field, has clear (and impressive) muscle definition in both his arms and his legs and he looks the part of a poor man's Jordy Nelson. That said, although I want to like him, he's clearly got a ways to go in terms of concentration and route running.

—Speaking of Rice, one of my plays of the day was by cornerback Bryce Callahan from Rice. He had good, tight coverage on a number of plays as many of the defensive backs struggled with an emphasis on illegal contact. His best was on a deep route down the near sideline, where he stayed right in the receiver's hip pocket and then showcased his athleticism by jumping and shielding the receiver with his body. Neither player came down with the ball, but it was a fantastic pass defensed.

I really hope these guys get combine invites. Callahan seems more low-profile than Gaines was last year, but maybe Gaines's break-out performance at the combine helps Callahan get an invite? There are lots of collegiate receivers who put up big numbers, Jordan will have that working against him. I think both would surprise with their 40-times if they do get invited. I know OwlMom15 has a high opinion of Callahan's speed!

Seems like a good place to mention that Ian Gray was selected for the College Gridiron Showcase on Jan. 31 in Arlington. Congratulations to Mr. Gray.

Yes I do! Bryce is just as fast as Phillip. If I remember correctly, Bryce was 1/100th of sec behind Phillip when they were timed. Both of them have tremendous closing speed in my opinion. I know Bryce has his height working against him but he has a great vertical! I hope he gets a chance to show the world how athletic he really is by getting an invite to the combine! Let's keep our fingers crossed for both of them.

RE: Callahan and Taylor - East West Shrine Game
I've loved Bryce's game for years. He and Gaines are both so talented, and even though they play the same position, couldn't be more different players.

The biggest endorsement of Bryce's outrageous cover skills, in my opinion, was usage during Gaines's senior year. with a no-doubt NFL corner on the team, Bryce was still the guy we left on an island with isolated receivers away from trips all year long.

Gaines's big, physical ability as a corner is really impressive, and translates to the Seattle-led popularity of bigger DBs.

Callahan is a more traditional cover corner, but he's the prototype for it, in my opinion.

Rice's Bryce Callahan showed good press technique and had a pass breakup for the West team on Day 4 @Shrine_Game

RE: Callahan and Taylor - East West Shrine Game
The Sporting News names Jordan Taylor one of the 10 players to watch in today's East-West Shrine Game...

http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-footbal...mian-swann

Quote:Picking one receiver from the West team was difficult. A torrential downpour early in Monday's practice turned the West's practice field into a soupy mess. The resulting slipping and sliding by receivers did not abate all week despite the lack of rain on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Onlookers would be tempted to throw out the entire unit after it looked so sloppy, but a few players managed to stand out in ways subtle and not so subtle.

For this entry, Taylor (6-4 1/2, 210) gets the nod over Arizona's Austin Hill (No. 29), who executed the best among West wideouts but did not show elite flexibility, cutting ability, speed or catch radius. Taylor consistently slipped on the chewed-up surface, but he also flashed a unique ability to plant a leg and explode out of breaks. He cut his routes sharply and finished with fantastic catch radius. His body language and ability to complete challenging catches leave one wondering what he may do Saturday when he steps onto the artificial turf of Tropicana Field. Taylor is capable of highlight-reel plays, which is the primary reason he gets the nod over a player who clearly had a better practice week.

This is so great for Bryce. He now needs to do his thing in the game. Based on all the good publicity this week, he should get an invite to the NFL combine. If he competes in the combine, watch his draft stock shoot up! The smaller non-P5 schools never get the respect they are due during the season. It takes a bigger stage to get noticed. GO BRYCE GO JORDAN.....rep Rice Today!!!!02-13-banana

I have yet to see Bryce on the field (maybe missed him). Jordan has been on the field a bit but the West QB's and OLine are terrible so doubt he will see the ball anywhere close enough to catch.

Bryce has been on the field twice but nothing coming his way. You are right, the West OLine is terrible. Jordan will never get a chance with this line. It's OK however. I remember last year Phillip's agent said that the scouts are there for the practices and most are gone by the time the game starts. They saw what they needed during the week. Bryce and Jordan got a few shout outs during the week 04-cheers

When the kicker is the offensive MVP for the game, you're not exactly witnessing an offensive explosion.
