Wonder if he's the new LB coach or if another defensive assistant is moving on.

Niemann has worked with LBs in his history, and a lot of assistants move among different position groups in their careers, so the new guy could end up working with LBs.

It could be that Niemann becomes LB coach and Watson takes over as safety coach.

RE: New Defensive Assistant
Seems odd that he would leave Pelini to come here. Looks like a good hire for us.

I would imagine we pay our assistants more than an FCS team does, no?

I'm sure we do. Just seems strange considering he went from FBS down to FCS and then leaves that gig when one of his best contacts in the profession takes over. I'm also assuming that Bo will be back in FBS within 2-3 years and that Watson would've had a good chance of going with him. I suppose that's still a possibility and maybe he has a better chance of doing that by getting more FBS experience. All speculation though so who knows.

edit: and Bo's older brother, Carl, was the HC at FAU when Watson was there. Weird.

It is weird, but it's still FBS vs. FCS.

According to the Youngstown State website, it states that Ross Watson was hired on January 7th to be the DB coach there?? Did he elect to come to NIU instead of coaching for Bo at YSU ?? Very confusing....

I believe he was Director of Operations at YSU last year, then promoted to DB Coach when Bo was hired.

Yes. That is correct. The YSU website states that he was promoted on January 7th to his new DB coaching position. Did he elect to stay there or his he actually coming to NIU ??

Sports Illustrated carried the story Saturday night, so it's probably legit.
