Well, he was at the basketball game today and received applause every time he was on the video board. I'm sure he heard the "Fire Ray Watts!" and "We want football!" chants.

I know this had been previously suggested before, but I didn't quite buy it. Why? Because you would think that president of a school like UAB is a full time job. How well can he really be doing his job when it's not a full-time commitment for him?

You would think $850k/ year would be enough to buy someone's undivided attention.

That's not the point. He is/was a neurologist first. He probably chooses to see patients to try and maintain his skills. Maintaining patient care is encouraged (and required for academic rank advancement) at most universities, and you must do a certain amount to maintain licensure and hospital/healthcare system credentialing. I'm a full-time, assistant professor, and I spend at least one day every two weeks in the operating room, and try to spend one day every week.

What you fail to realize is that this is very different than the circumstances of which you speak. It's not the same as even a dean taking time to see a few patients, let alone a professor. When you're the president of a university of this stature, then that should be your only focus.

I don't fail to realize anything. I'm merely explaining the possible other side of the story. Lord knows I'm not defending this goon for anything, but I am explaining what is likely the issue in terms of maintaining his credentials and/or licensure. Understand that if any credentialed provider EVER has them limited, taken away, or put on a probationary status, all of which could occur if a provider doesn't meet his/her requirements (i.e. not seeing enough patients or performing enough direct patient care), then it will follow that individual for the remainder of his/her career. There are other professional service requirements as well, but that is another issue.
Beat the guy up for being an idiot, egomaniac, poor leader, poor communicator, etc. But, for folks to bash him for actions on the part of maintaining his professional requirements, that is excessive and demonstrates ignorance on our part.
