Awesome! Great news for the Marshall football program. It's great to see another CUSA program move people into the College Football Hall of Fame.

This gives us 6 in the HOF. One up on La Tech now.

I would think Chad Pennington gets in at some point and also Moss and Leftwich. Twenty years from now Cato may also have a shot.

Marshall needs to push for Chris Parker next or maybe even Doug Chapman.

Could Shuler make it in? Over 300 receptions? Darius Watts? I'm not sure?

I was surprised he never got a shot in the NFL.

If you are taking about Chris Parker, he was invited to Cincy's training camp and I think was on Cincy's roster all throughout the 95 preseason. I can't remember if he ever got in a game or not. I think he was either cut the week before the 53 man roster was announced or the week of the 53 man roster. If you are talking about Payton Im no surprised. Payton had a good skill set for the SoCon and IAA. He like Leftwich had a slow delivery and was slower than molasses.

Shu I think you could make a case for, he finished at Marshall with 322 rec for 3563 yards and 25 TDs. He ranks 1st at Marshall with rec and 2nd in yards. He also ranks 10th in the NCAA overall in rec and 11th in yards.

Darius Watts was amazing but would have to go look at his stats. I know a lot of people would argue with me over this but I think Josh Davis was the better receiver at the time.

M. Payton did, kind of. W/ Dallas. He had a guy named Troy Aikman coming off a SB win as their starter... I read everything I could when he was a FA in their camp and what I found was that they really were pleasantly surprised and liked him. He got a bad bone bruise in his leg and they cut him. A shame, he was in all reality a bigger, stronger version of R. Cato imho. Quite a QB. If he played for MU in this day and time he would've been drafted and got a real shot. Back then, the stigma on I-AA guys was pretty strong despite MP having great skills.

To put this in perspective. Over 5 million players have played college football. Just under 1,000 are in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Someone said on Herfans that you had to be a first team All-Ameican to even be considered for the CFHoF. I assumed that meant in each division, but regardless that would eliminate a lot of names people have tossed around.

Big Praise for Your former QB and for the Thundering Herd. Hall of Fame is a Major Deal!

Here is a link to the criteria used to determine HOF recognition. Since turning IA in 1997 only Moss (Numerous All-Am teams) and Leftwich (PFW) have made 1st team all-American status. Even though Pennington was 5th in the Heisman voting in 1999, two other QBs (Vick from VT and Hamilton from GT) were making the 1st team squads. I don't think that 1st team all-American requirement is fair because it depends on who else played your position that year.

Well to be fair, if you weren't one of the best 2 players at that position in any given year with 4 years to reach that status (in other words 8 tries), do you really deserve to be considered one of the best of all time?

Randy Moss will no doubt be the next HOF that played for the Herd. Will be a first ballot NFL hall of famer as well.

RE: Marshall QB Michael Payton (89-92)
Besides Pennington in the 1999 class were 3 QBs ahead of him in the Heisman voting: Hamilton (Sr), Vick (Fr), and Brees (Jr). Ratay (Sr) from La. Tech was #10. There were some other pretty good senior QBs that year too (Tom Brady, Chris Redman, Marc Bulger, Tee Martin, etc.). Pennington was drafted in the 1st round in 2000, everyone else went 3rd round or later that year.
I don't feel that just because you didn't make 1st string all-American you aren't HOF potential. To be named 1st string AA means you have to be recognized as the best QB in all Div I; competing against every QB in the country; freshman through senior. There is also a bias against anyone from the lower conferences being a 1st string AA. If you look at Pennington's value to the Herd and his stats he definitely deserves HOF recognition. Ask any Herd fan who the top 3 QBs in Marshall history are and Pennington will be mentioned every time - usually at #1. As good as Michael Payton was (and he was outstanding), many would not put him in the top 3. But since he was the IAA version of the Heisman winner and 1st team IAA all-American he qualifies and will deservingly enter the CFB HOF.
If you read the HOF criteria you will see that Moss may have a problem too because they place some weight to getting a diploma and staying out of trouble.
