Wow. The nine mile swim is bad enough but consider:

1) This is salt water and the temperatures are a little cool this time of year.
2) The waters are infested with sharks, barracuda and other predatory fish.

He is very luck to be alive.

74 degree water temps, and the currents must have been at least neutral to not take him out further.

The article says he was in the water 10-12 hours. Over that amount of time, even 80 degree water can induce hypothermia. Water conducts a lot more heat out of your body than air does.

That's where the 4 years at Syracuse come in handy....

I read that Konrad made it ashore and walked up to an oceanfront mansion wearing nothing but his underwear. I'm sure the homeowner thought Konrad was a crazy homeless person.

RE: OT, Rob Konrad surives 9 mile swim back to shore
PLANTATION, Fla. -- The former NFL fullback entered the room with a wobble in his walk, and needed assistance climbing a podium so he could face a media throng and discuss his death-defying 16-hour swim to shore.

Rob Konrad sipped from a bottle of water, his efforts to rehydrate ongoing four days after the episode. His wife sat at his side rubbing his leg in support, and tears welled in their eyes as he spoke Monday.

AP Photo/Lynne SladkyRob Konrad described how he survived 16 hours in the water last week after falling from his boat.

"Happy to be here," he began with a wry smile.

"I shouldn't be here," he said later, his voice cracking.

The 38-year-old Konrad's escape was a testament to willpower and world-class athleticism. The first reports of his adventure last week received worldwide attention.
