This game is HUGE. See they just beat Charlotte. I know about their history and stuff, very tough place to play. I am not that familiar with this years team. I did hear coach Jones on the post game show last night say that coach Stith told him their 6'6" 250 guy "was a monster".

So I ask you guys, Coach, DaBig and others who follow these teams, what do we need to do to win and how do we do it. They sure seem to score a lot of points. Here's to the Monarchs showing the Hilltoppers what defense looks like.

I don't follow these teams as closely as some of our guys do but wku's strength is FT's and like any game if we can limit those and REB's and do our usual thing of playing good defense we should be able to take care of business.

RE: Western Kentucky
I watched them last night. They had 4 starters play 30+ minutes. Their start is TJ Price. He's a 6-4, do-it-all guard. He can score from deep, he leads them in assists, and he rebounds his position. He's a really good player.

Their "monster" in the middle is George Fant. 6'6", 250. He's as strong as a house and can score around the hoop. He does a good job getting post position. He'll be a big challenge for our interior defense.

Their other two threats are Chris Harrison-Docks, a volume shooter from deep who also averages 3 assists per game, and Trency Jackson. Jackson is the more efficient of the two when it comes to scoring and shoots 40+% from downtown.

WKU hit 9 three pointers in the first half against Charlotte and were tied at the half. Charlotte killed WKU on the boards. WKU seems to be susceptible to giving up offensive rebounds. Charlotte had 15, Stony Brook had 14, Saint Joe's had 13, Murray State had 15, Ole Miss had 17, Chicago State had 16. I'm hopeful we'll take advantage of our knack for offensive rebounds and utilize those extra possessions.

So Coach, we gave to really guard the 3 point line and check the monster ? No problem!
Go Monarchs. I feel Douglas getting used in this one.

Douglas looked really solid last night. He makes his layups, takes care of the ball, and had several deflections on defense including blocking a 3 point shot. If JJ can get him fully integrated by the time March rolls around, we are going to be that much more dangerous. On a side note, Freeman has got to play better. Palmore was the better of the two PGs last night.

That is the beauty of this team in my opinion. I didn't think Trey nor Aaron played well last night but we found a way to win. Next man up philosophy. There never seems to be any animosity amongst the players when somebody gets it going and plays well. Love this TEAM!

I think we need Freeman or Bacote to play well to win on Saturday. Palmore did a great job of taking care of the ball, but we'll need the scoring to beat better teams. I guess last night was a good night for Trey to have one of his worst games of the year at the same time as Aaron being off.

We've handled teams with top guards so far this season. Just need to do it again.

They'll come out flying I'm sure, since this is a big game, we just need to weather that storm.

If we take care of the ball and shoot around our averages, we'll be fine. If we commit 13 first half turnovers, we are going to be in a double digit hole at halftime. We aren't playing Duke, but unlike Marshall, this team is plenty capable and likely to take advantage of unforced errors. Bowling Green, KY is only 4 hours from Huntington, WV. Assuming they made the trip last night, they'll have 2 full days to loosen up. I expect a much sharper team on Saturday.

I like this C-USA schedule. Thursday-Saturday is exactly what the NCAA tournament is. They play Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday. Having one full day in between to prepare. The only difference is the travel in-between. But the way the travel partners are set up, it is only a 4-5 hour drive between schools.

The biggest difference is we know all the opponents on our schedule before the season starts so we actually have a lot more than one day to prepare. We may only have one day to singly focus on the team we are about to play, but there is already a decent base knowledge to work from whereas in the tournament we are more likely to have one day to prepare for someone we know absolutely nothing about. What generally happens is both teams just play the way they play and the chips fall where they may.

RE: Western Kentucky
I'm hoping there were some jitters from the team in their first game as a ranked team. (The players said has much in the Pilot article.) That should subside with experience. Winning the game against a good WKU team on the road will go a long way toward that goal.

A couple of minor quibbles from last night that I hope we improve upon: 1) Our in-bounds plays from under our own basket, and 2) interior scoring. We turned the ball over twice last night in-bounding from under our basket. We've struggled with this throughout the year. Not always turning the ball over, but having trouble getting it in-bounds in a good position. Last night, we also seemed to fall in love with the "3"...maybe because they were falling, maybe because of Marshall. I would like to see a little more balanced scoring from the inside. That seemed to really pick up when Douglas entered the game. The high post passes from Arledge (I think) found him open underneath two or three times. He's really good at closing the deal.

Overall, not a bad game. I'm looking forward to Saturday!

I expect to see a heavy rotation of Ebondo, Bib and Arledge on Fant. But... Ross might be the strongest of the bunch so may be him? Whoever it is I suspect some early foul trouble on.

I watched the game also and felt that Charlotte should be kicking themselves, its was their game, but couldn't get the job done at the end. Charlotte has a lot of talent, but schizophrenic, and no floor general to organize them. Ross is the perfect man and can handle Fant. WKU gets little to NO scoring from the bench, they will jack up 3s anywhere, any time, and missed a ton of FTs. They got hammered on the boards, that's our strength. Other than having a bulls-eye on our back I feel alot better after watching WKU. Control the boards, wear them down 2nd half, steady guard play and we should get #14.

RE: Western Kentucky
Nice write up by Coach.

We'll pull away in the 2nd half, WKU plays a very short bench. We play up to 10 and our starters should be fresh. Our defense will be important, we need to make it hard to get open shots, make them run faster and harder to their spots. Shooters need their legs and the shots won't fall in the 2nd half.

Douglas is so good, I don't think we can keep him out. He responded well to starting, let him start and Baker 1st off the bench. Jordan brings great energy, that was his roll at Hampton and he's very comfortable with it.

WKU has a balance team, but they need to fire on all cylinders to beat us. They will certainly be jacked up at the start, we need to keep it a game till the 2nd half. If their shots don't fall early for WKU, we'll pull away. We can close out games with the players we have, they can make shots and FTs at the end.

Hope we get another solid outing from Arledge, he's been getting better each game and we'll need all hands to contain Big George.

While WKU gives up a lot of ORBs (12.1/g) they also get a lot themselves (11.6/g, led by Fant 3.4/g). ODU must do more than break even with ORBs.

FTs are also a potential Achilles heel for WKU. Although Price and Harrison-Dokes combine for .802 FT, the rest of the team shoots a combined .586.

RE: Western Kentucky
I'd put Taylor and Biberaj on Fant. Ross is too important offensively to be given the Fant assignment since whoever is on him will probably get into foul trouble. Both Taylor and Bib are strong and should be able to at least limit Fant's production. Put Ross on Lawson/Rostov. Lawson is a legit 7-footer but Ross can play taller than his height. This would mean that the starting line-up would have to change (since Arledge would do well against Lawson too) or a quick substitution after the tip.
