Should Josh give Dominic Artis a second chance...
Quote: Dominic Artis, the former Oregon Ducks point guard who was dismissed from the team and barred from the university last spring, will start his comeback to Division I basketball at a junior college near his hometown.
Artis will practice but not play in games during the 2014-15 season with Diablo Valley College of Concord, Calif., the team's head coach said Thursday..
"I don't think there's anybody who hasn't asked for a second chance in life," Diablo Valley coach Steve Coccimiglio said in a phone interview. "It's really an opportunity for him. He wants to use this as a platform to get his associate's degree and to prove himself for the next level."
DVCC is a half-hour drive east from Richmond, where Artis played three seasons at Salesian High. Because he will not play in games at the junior college level, he will retain two years of eligibility that can be used if he transfers back to a Division I school.
Artis averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds in 53 career games across two seasons at Oregon, where he helped lead the Ducks to consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
Two weeks before the 2014 NCAA Tournament, however, Artis and teammates Damyean Dotson and Brandon Austin accused of sexual assault of a University of Oregon freshman on March 9, hours after the Ducks ended their regular season by beating No. 3 Arizona at home. In mid-April, five weeks after the alleged incident, the Lane County District Attorney declined to file charges against any of the three, but all were dismissed from the team and later barred from campus for conduct "unbecoming of an Oregon student-athlete."
JUCOrecruiting.com first reported Artis's plan to join Diablo Valley. According to Coccimiglio, Artis enrolled in a preseason basketball class since Aug. 18 to prepare for practices, which begin Oct. 1.
Artis visited St. John's in June but the Red Storm reportedly passed on offering him a spot because of concerns stemming from the allegations.
Coccimiglio met with Artis and his mother, Tamara, before allowing Artis to practice, he said.
"I've told him he has to be totally a part of our system," Coccimiglio said. "He has to learn to the offense and be a part of conditioning. It'll be good for him, and good for us to practice against him."

Oregon transfer Dominic Artis will not play this season, but will attend classes, workouts and practice at Diablo Valley College in California. By sitting this year, Artis will keep his remaining two years of eligibility and will be able to transfer back to the Division 1 level as long as meets all of the NCAA requirements for junior college transfers. He will have to transfer his credit hours from Oregon into Diablo Valley and will basically be deemed as a junior college transfer. He will have to meet GPA and credit hour requirements like any other JC transfer.
Artis was a Top 100 recruit out of high school (2012 class) and was ranked as the 52nd best player in the country according to 247Sports Composite Recruiting Rankings. Artis had offers from Kansas and Memphis along with many other high major programs out of high school.
As a sophomore at Oregon he averaged 4.4 points and 2.1 assists per game while playing nearly 17 minutes per night. Diablo Valley is only 30 miles from San Francisco, which is Artis’ home town. Cal and St. Mary’s have already inquired about him, look for plenty of mid and high major programs to recruit Artis as the season progresses.

Yes.
These kinds of situations have actually been one of Josh's bright spots & it would address a HUGE need. Artis was the reason Oregon had so much success the last few years. Even in March.

We haven't had a lot of luck with people named Dominic sticking around.

Yes he is a player taylor made for Josh's pick and roll offense. He can take his man off the dribble. Yes.

I think the roster will have a couple of spots open in the summer.
If this guy is the next Josh Gray, then take him.

I dunno...Paz took a chance on J.Kendrick, Iverson, D.Woodson-all not wanted by other programs our size and has had to pay for it. Although he's also had a few work out too. I don't think he can afford another gamble in the current climate.
Side note: Shaq's knock in HS was his motor and focus...in the U18 it was his motor and focus...now, when the criticism is motor and focus it's Josh's fault.
Point is: Josh has erred in taking so many questionable players on. He has to filter some of these out now.

Another option, and this is a Gregg Marshall staple, is to hire the head coach of one of the nation's top junior colleges as an assistant, which serves multiple purposes - Xs and Os coach, assistant who may be able to instantly bring a player or two, assistant who knows the JC scene well and knows who can play and who can't, and with prep schools now being obsolete - an assistant who can place academic risks at junior colleges and keep tabs on them.
Marshall has both Steve Forbes and Greg Heiar on his staff - two of the best JC coaches a couple of years ago.

Your absolutely correct. he has recruited a lot of top talent that had questionable flaws but do not preform up to their ranking. That is why Josh is considered a good recruiter but lousy coach.

Need a big anyway.
Next year it's just Austin and Shaq and that's if Shaq doesn't grad transfer out, but that's another discussion.
Either way, there are some guys who CAN play the 4, but we've seen that movie for a couple of years now.
