I don't know if they need virus protection but I installed Malwarebytes on my Samsung Galaxy S3 and it runs often, on it own. I don't know if it helps or not because I have never had anything found because of the Malwarebytes searching.

Do I need anti-virus protection for my phone or tablet?

Just curious, but any av program I have installed has said to remove any other av programs to avoid possible conflicts and possible system problems... Even ran into a couple conflicts before. Can they be run together now?

Apparently this combination can. I am not any kind of tech guy, so I don't know the reasons why that is, but my tech guy that does my 'puter recommended the 3 by name, i installed and paid for them and I have never had problem one. I do know that Norton 360 will not work with AVG. I know that from experience. But, it works very well with Malwarebytes.

There's probably a lot of folks on here who could answer this much better topkat, but so as not to leave you hanging, I'll give my novice layman who slept at a Holiday Inn interpretation. It's confusing in part because there's often a lot of crossover, but Norton 360 is primarily an antivirus (as is AVG which is why they don't mix well) designed to keep infections and other bad stuff away from invading your computer. Malewarebytes, on the other hand, specializes in finding potentially harmful things that have already made their way onto your computer and removing them. CCleaner, as the name implies, focuses on cleaning up and removing any stray files malwarebytes might have missed in its removal along with all the other unnecessary junk files that accumulate on your computer over time so that it runs more effectively and efficiently.

BTW and FWIW, Malwarebytes and CCleaner also have highly rated free versions that I use that have fewer features than the paid versions. I'm not sure if there's a Norton free version, but you might get Norton, McAfee or something like it included free via your Internet provider. Or there's several other free antivirus products that might be nearly as good or even better - depending upon who you ask and/or your perspective. Again all just my lay understanding fwiw.

That makes sense, thanks. I guess soon they will be making software for what the Maalwarebytes and CCleaner can't find (as in a third tier of protection).

I've never got a straight answer from anyone, but does anyone know if smartphones and tablets need virus protection of some type?

Pretty much everything except iOS (Apple won't allow it anyway) and WinRT (nobody uses it and there are very few apps).
