RE: Who do the bowls want
At the GoDaddy the locals have always left around halftime of the game regardless of the score, probably because at halftime its already 10:30 or 11 PM. The kick time should really be moved up and hour, other than that I love going down there great atmosphere around town, I can take any one of my kids(not all 4 because I'm crazy not stupid) and have a great weekend.

Met a guy during the pep rally that is a USA fan who said he would be going to the game because he loves A State too. He also said it was about dang time to implode that stadium and he'd rather USA play at a local HS for the next 4 or 5 seasons until they could build a on campus stadium.

I wouldn't mind going to the Go Daddy Bowl but the day and time sucks. Why do they play it the day before the work week after the holidays?

Its the only football game on that night. There is no football competition, and it sued to be the night before the NC game. For me being in Jan makes the trip doable, being 5 days before Christmas locks me out of a bowl. Sure I could try to save money differently but its still hard to justify a bowl trip that close to what is without a doubt the biggest holiday of the year.

Every one of these threads (and there have been many) we (TXST fans) state that we see the handwriting as "unless we win conference" we won't see a Bowl game over some teams that may be 7-5 or even 6-6 because nobody knows how we'll travel and don't want to take a chance to test the waters. We're told we're wrong yet, every one of these threads tends towards that conclusion.

IMHO - stop telling us our scenario is incorrect. For the foreseeable future, if we are 1 of 5 teams with Bowl Eligibility and not CC's, we are going to have to depend on backing into another Bowl where another conference can't fill a spot.

Unfortunately, I've got a feeling NMSU is in the same position, although the NMSU does do 'Tough Enough To Wear Pink' for breast cancer, so maybe that'd play for the 'Care Bowl'.

But barring that, I'd say we've gotta be champs to bowl.

We've got a long way to go before even bowl eligibility is an issue, but I can see where TxSt is coming from.

idk, right now some really bad teams are inflating conference records. I think a time is coming soon where we wont have more than 4 bowl eligible teams. Y'all have an uphill battle, though, no doubt. we need a tx or west-la based bowl.

I admire your input on this BBS... SERIOUSLY. But yannow, just... WIN bay-BAY!!!! Win this conference like *newcomer*, GS did this year and your big argument would be Mobile vs. NOLA for the best location. Then you SHOW UP. It's really that simple. WIN - SHOW UP.

I am so glad to have TXST in our conference but I'm really starting to wonder why you guys are so pissed over being passed over when you had an even record against D-I teams (as did USA) when you simply could've just won the conference and shown the world (i.e., ESPN) you'll travel in great masses to cheer your Bobcats on.

What's this "glass ceiling" crap all about anyway? Welcome to "big boy football". It seems you TXST folks have decided amongst yourselves you are the "Vandy" or "Kentucky" of the SBC. REALLY????

Glad to have you aboard 04-cheers

I don't understand your problems with Ladd. I drive to my preferred parking spot, go to the donor tent and have free beer, good food, listen to the provided band or watch the other games on the big screen tv's. The marching band comes in and gives us a tune with the cheerleaders giving us a cheer. I get a bottle of water, leave the tent and go to my seat. Buy a reasonably priced brew during the game. Sit in the shade on hot days, stay till the end of the game and leave the stadium with no problem since so many people leave early. Whats not to like. lol

With all due respect, you're full of it. Yeah, we had a better overall record than you, the same record as stAte, whom we beat head to head, and yes were passed over. The reality in this conference, which you want to deny is this: If we finish bowl eligible with a record the same, or maybe even a game better than ULL, ULM, Troy, USA, stAte, or any other school in conference that happens to be located closer to one of the Conference's bowl tie ins, then we're the odd man out, for no other reason than geography. So yes, for us it is pretty much win the conference, or place so high we can't be ignored, or hope we have an overall record that places us in an At-Large. And if that perception IS reality, well so be it, but then don't blame us if we bolt when/if/given the chance. Every school has the right to better its circumstances. . . . Spleen sufficently vented, feeling much better now . .. . no offense intended.

What has to happen is have teams who go to bowls make sure their attendance is as high as possible. I know it doesn't have anything to do with records, but high attendance and bowl wins creates a better opinion with bowls and makes it more likely for the conference to add additional tie-ins. Realistically, I wouldn't expect any additional bowls to be added, so to add tie-ins we need to steal one from a conference who's under performing. Since the bowls are about money first and foremost, I think attendance is the #1 factor in how you do that. JMO

RE: Who do the bowls want
While us getting left out in the bowl season sucks, before we can start saying the system is broken (and it really is... But that's not a Sun Belt issue, that's a bowl issue overall), we need to clean up our own house.

With the student body and alumni size of our university, there's no reason why we shouldn't have attendance in the 22-25k range. There's no reason at least half of that shouldn't be season ticket holders.

Given the relative compact nature of the conference (Idaho/NMSU/App notwithstanding), there's no reason we shouldn't be traveling 5k+ to away games.

People will be quick to point back to the 20+ years of "mediocrity"(I say that's pretty generous) as a hill we have to climb... Well, that's true, and that's why you win.

I openly wonder (and I know there will never be a definitive answer to this): If we were averaging 5k in traveling fans, had home attendance average of of 27k, and had 10-12k in season ticket holders... would Camellia picked USA still? I honestly don't know. But I do know that after this recent showing by USA (which was solid), if we had those numbers, they'd be more open to the idea of gambling on us.

AState was in the passed over scenario before.

Then in 2011 we won the conference and took a big crowd 7 hours away, spent lots of money, helped restaurants set single day sales records, and had Mobile hotels at 97% occupancy.

We created the reputation that put us in Mobile as an at-large within the Sun Belt this year by winning the conference and then making a great impression. We made our luck in the bowl business.

I agree. We have to win the conference and then show what we can do at the bowl. We are never going to win the geography argument with a 7-5 or 8-4 record. Once we get to a bowl, I think attendance and interest will pick-up. Or we could just open up the season with a win at Florida State next season and that will spark interest with fans and bowls.

3. Texas St.

Camellia
1. USA
2. Troy
3. GS

Go Daddy
1. stAte
2. ULL

1. GS
2. USA
3. App St.

No doubt the NOLA bowl would be nuts to pick ULMost over stAte. State has a prove record of bringing the crowds, and ULMost not so much.

I will let the rest of you knuckle heads pick out all the other bowls. NOLA UL, stAte, TxSt, and long shot USA.

Just curious. Is there a single team any team in our conference that travels 5k deep to away games. Or for that matter has half thier stadium filled with season ticket holders. For that matter please tell me which G5 programs live up to these modest standards. When the requirements to gain admission to a bowl is different for some conference members and not the others then yes the system is broken. Whether the Sun Belt has any fault is another argument for another day. IMO the conference has a responsibility to all its members to get them into a bowl of they meet the criteria. With that said the only fix is to get bowl tie-ins that will give Western conference mates a chance to play when they meet the criteria.
So to conclude. When one conference mate can get an invite with the min number of wins. It's a tough pill to swallow when you're told just Win the conference and you'll get your chance. Sorry but this whole thread seems like a slap in the face and makes me want to 03-puke
It's not just about the fans. It's also about the players.
end rant.

It's also about the players.
end rant.

Well said, Sir, well said! 04-cheers

^this^

And hat's off to USA, btw. They apparently brought a very good crowd to the Camellia bowl and as CajunAmos said above, that's what the owners of the bowls want to see.

That sounds really good, but how does increasing our attendance fix our geography problem? When you look at Montgomery, for example, there are eight schools within 400 miles of Montgomery. Troy is 48 miles away and Mobile 170 miles away. They would both bring good crowds. San Marcos is 800 miles from Montgomery. Why would the Camellia Bowl ever take a risk on Texas State when they have eight other schools that are much closer?

The 5k plus traveling number per road game is a fantasy number. That was pulled out of the air. We just need to win and get a bowl bid somewhere. Then we can show that we can travel.
