Top 25 TV Markets For College Football
Per 2012 ESPN Survey:

http://johnclay.bloginky.com/2012/08/29/...-football/

Note: Memphis and Nashville tied at #16 with 2.5 rating. Both cities have finished in the top FIVE at least once.

That could simply mean that a lot of Tennessee Vols fans live there...

A survey taken a couple years ago by the local newspaper (The Commercial Appeal) showed that there are more Memphis fans living here than Tennessee and Ole Miss combined. There is no doubt that the SEC is heavily watched in Memphis, but there is clearly tremendous potential for the Big 12 to significantly increase its total market size (as well as recruiting territory).

PS - Did you know that Memphis and Virginia Tech have played 6 football games? The overall record is 3-3.

Being located in a market =/= delivering that market for TV.

Of course it doesn't, but the list shows where the most rabid college football fans live. Do you think the people of Memphis and surrounding area would not begin watching the Big 12 if Memphis belonged, just as the people of Houston and Missouri began watching the SEC after Texas A&M and Mizzou defected? Even local SEC fans will watch Memphis on TV (hoping to see us lose, but that doesn't matter). And do you think that the prestige and popularity of Memphis would not dramatically increase after percptions are changed by Big 12 affiliation, just as Louisville's improved in the Big East and ACC?

Come on that was based upon 2011 numbers. A little outdated don't you think? 07-coffee3

1. That list is at least three years old (it says for 2011, three seasons ago) and:

2. Birmingham being number one shows just how much UAB got screwed, as it shows how much of a potential fan base they had if they ever got really good especially if UAT and AU were down. And I've cited this before (I've heard of Birmingham being a good football market).

Can be taken either way. I guess that's high, but 25th has to be the lowest we rank for any real sport. College basketball, NFL, MLB easily T10 I assume.

Sure (and there are a lot of Ole Miss Fans too) but odds are people in Memphis are watching the Tigers as well.

Generally speaking people in major cities follow more than one team, especially when that city has its own team. People in Cincinnati tune in to watch Cincinnati and Ohio State. People in Pittsburgh tune in to watch both Pitt and Penn State. People in Miami tune in to watch the U and The Gators.

Nobody roots for Old Myth in Memphis unless they live across the state line in the Heart of Dixie. 07-coffee3

Yes, a little. Memphis has actually finished in the Top 5 once more since then. Imagine how well Memphis would do if UofM were in the Big 12.

Without a network, there isn't much of a way to monetize that viewership for the conference. 'Eat what you kill' is exactly the way the B12 wants it.

Fascinating that Cincinnati was a top-10 market for most of the past 5 years. This year it dropped substantially.

So in years that the Bearcats are nationally relevant, it's a top-10 market. But in a year when the Buckeyes are in the national championship game and the Bearcats lose 3 early-season games, the market has lower ratings overall.

Everybody in Birmingham is watching Alabama and Auburn. After that, it's the rest of the SEC.
