Question about uneven division
I have a question for you guys in the MAC about how you schedule for football in an uneven 13 school conference? Does the side with 7 schools have to omit an opponent from the schedule from its own division? Example: If UMASS doesn't play Buffalo even though their on the same side of the MAC, they both finish 6-2 and have same overall record: how is it decided which school gets to play in the MAC Championship game vs the other side of the conference? Also, how is it decided which teams do not play each other in that 7 team division of the MAC. Not trolling, just curious and Go MAC Wrestling!! Good conference!

RE: Question about uneven division
Look at the six school division : eight conference games, five division opponents, so three cross-division games, so there are a total of eighteen cross division games. So 18/7 = 2 4/7, so in the seven school division, four schools play three cross division and therefore five in-division, three schools play two cross division and therefore six in-division. Also, one of the Eastern schools (Bowling Green) has a locked cross-division rivalry game ~ if they were always in the "three cross-division" group for that, the conference could simply alternate the rest of the division in groups of three between playing 2/6 and playing 3/5.

I'm not entirely sure what all of the tie-breakers are ... people always mention the various permutations when its an issue in the third or second last week of the season, so clearly somebody's got it written down somewhere.

Thank you, so it the 7 team division, 3 schools play 2 cross division games while the other 4 teams play 3 cross division and miss out on 1 school within their own division? Did I get it right? Thanks!

Yup. Miami played CMU, NIU, and WMU this year out of the West but didn't play BG.

Yeah, don't see it but I do think Marshall should rejoin the MAC or maybe even Army if there's a chance to keep UMASS. Army/buffalo/UMASS could be a great boon for the league down the road and Army has wrestling

Long thread about that down there, no need to restart that. Marshall is happier where they are at present, the new CUSA East is really an excellent fit for them.

Unfortunately the MAC is probably the Go5 conference that does Army the LEAST good toward the mix of Northeastern and National schedule they like to play.

RE: Question about uneven division
Army plays 2-3 MAC schools every year (this year they got pounded by KSU, but beat both Ball St. and Buffalo) but they really are better off playing their normal schedule. They just don't need a conference now. If they get the program fully turned around, a conference may be a wise thing to do, but it would be very unlikely that it would be the MAC, CUSA or Sun Belt. If I were they, I'd stay independent before going those three in their current forms. AAC makes some geographic sense, but not now for competitive reasons.
