Channel Master DVR+ now offering the free internet streaming channels as part of their box to add onto their streaming apps (Pandora, YouTube, Vudu, etc) and their OTA channels (CBS, NBC, Fox, etc).
So now you can get a business channel (Bloomberg), a weather channel, a shopping channel (QVC), news channels (BBC World, CNN World), BYUTV, etc. all FREE.
ESPN3 for sports
Crackle is the poor man's equivalent to NetFlix and is FREE
PBS Kids for cartoons FREE
and if you really still need ESPN, 2, TNT, TBS, etc... than pay just $20.
There is no need for Cable for the majority of the population.

How do they get ESPN3? Only based on your ISP. In many areas that isn't an option.
On top of that, you still don't get ESPNU or News, which has a ton of content now.

This sounds great. Too bad it doesn't work with Amazon Fire TV yet.
When they announce that, I'll buy a Tablo.

This new Dish package is clearly not for the die hard fan of a particular team. I'm a die hard Syracuse fan and Red Sox fan. Ideally, I need ESPN, 2, 3, U, and News, plus NESN, TBS (MLB playoffs and NCAA tourney), and FS1 (MLB and Playoffs). This package only provides a fraction of these games.
This package appears directed at the young adult male demographic who is comfortable with the cut the cord environment. The combination of ESPN/2, TBS and TNT gives you a strong package of major sporting events, NBA, NCAA's, College Football Playoff, Monday Night Football, etc., plus Adult Swim is pretty popular with this demographic. The general programming adds some balance, but it really seems targeted at this demo.

^ clearly every sports fan is different, some die-hard that need every channel possible, and others who just need some sports. Others may only need mlb.tv, Big East fans may only care about FS1 and could care less about ESPN. A MAC fan would get 90% of their games on ESPN3 and may not need any other channel (thats my scenario).
BUT, this and other similar packages coming in the future WILL pull subscribers from cable bundles because of scenarios above or demographics or whatever. Those subscribers will then no longer have Big Ten Network or Comcast SportsNet Chicago, etc, because all they really wanted was ESPN and a low price.
This will not damage ESPN too much, but will lead to lower subscriber bases for BTN, Pac 12 Network, and all the regional sports stations. It could cause real havoc to them. How could it not?
The Big Ten Network has 60 million subscribers. There are no where close to 60 million Big Ten fans. Not close. Big Ten Network subscriptions will tumble and so will revenues unless prices raise 8x. And thats what should happen. Their fams and only their fans should pay. No subsidies.

SkitterTV is an app for Roku that you can download to get CBS Sports. I think it costs $4.95/mo. I would keep it just for about 6 months a year because there aren't any sports after early April that I care to watch.

You still pay somebody somewhere...
Pay for internet/data plan
Pay for streaming service
Pay for cell phone
the only true cord cutting is going off the grid.

TBS and TNT are an interesting play. Why? This year, more of the CBS NCAA basketball tournament is on these channels. I cannot remember which channel will show the NCAA men's basketball championship- TBS or Tru (both are CBS companies).

I agree. This will hurt the conference networks. I haven't cut the cord yet mainly out of laziness but there are simply so many channels that I have no use for that I really need to stop throwing money away for. If the competition really starts to take a toll on cable, I expect that they will move much closer to an a la carte model as well. If I could just have the ESPN Networks, CBS Sports Network because they show AAC games, SNY because they show UConn games, I'd be all set for sports.

You watch, when content owners realize that these streaming guys are getting/generating the views for their content they will up their price, when the rights fees increase for the content providers go up to secure content, your prices will go up. Notice how NetFlix doubled their rates over the last 3 years?
Also, from somebody somewhere, there is going to be a funding need for the infrastructure to do 1080p HD/ _____ 4k video streaming with the bandwidth to keep quality up, lag down, and compression issues no existent whether you are going cell phone/wireless, cable internet, dsl internet, or other methods of access.

Yeah we have google fiber in our office. Don't get your hopes up on that yet. It's not as good as people think. In fact our net got worse after it went in.

Cord Cutters ....BOOM
To me this is a yawn announcement. I've said often before on this board that ISPs are going to go down this path and cable might as well. Why bother buying and hassling with cable boxes, let the consumer buy their own box whether it be sling, Roku, Amazon, or Apple? Cut your install costs of running coax all over the house. Save the nets the hassle of billing and marketing by handling authorization for them and keep the incentive to market for them.
True cord cutting isn't going to happen for most sports fans. The person who loves sports who is going to cord cut is happy with the local NFL assignment and is deemed out-of-market for their favorite (if they have one) MLB, NBA, or NHL team. If they like college football then their top team needs to be an Alabama, Ohio State type team that is available often OTA or no worse than ESPN ESPN2 if they want to do the Dish thing or is generally ESPN3.
But this isn't even a new thing Dish has done it for some time with Dishworld using more obscure channels.
