A sad read. It seems obvious from the way this played out that the selection committee was certainly aware of the danger, but honestly thought that the right coach and the right development would save the day. It seems pretty clear that was never the case.

I am so glad the media is still pushing the issue and doing the research. Very revealing information.

I think it is going to help get the board separated in the legislature. The Jimbo Fisher line and the lines about Bryant Jr. and St. John. It's stuff everyone already knew, but it's much worse when it comes from the UAB Athletic Director.

Yes Sir!

Im a fan of UAB staying and respect their program. They're traditionally a good hoops team (not counting this year) and God knows we need more of them in CUSA. The problem is, after reading the article and listening to the media, I just don't know how you trust a single word any of their leadership says. How can CUSA move forward with them? Nothing against the school or the players or teams, they have my respect, but the leadership at UAB has lost my respect. As long as they are under the thumb of UA are they worth the risk? Maybe, maybe not.

It's a fair point. No one here trusts Ray Watts, either. As long as Watts is president of UAB, we're in danger of losing not just athletics but most undergrad programs as well. Watts was an undergrad here from 72-76, and returned as an administrator in 2003. Despite his "42 years at UAB" lie, he wasn't here when athletics arrived, and football, and explosive growth and academic achievements like the truly innovative Honors Program he hates so passionately. His greatest achievement to date is taking over the School of Medicine when it was ranked #20 nationally, and piloting it to a #43 ranking.

Watts appears to want to return UAB to ca. 1976: a medical school with a small commuter college attached. Maybe he thinks that will bring back his hair and erectile function, too; it's as good a guess as any I've seen for the insane course he's set.

CUSA membership is the least of our worries as long as Ray Watts remains in office.
