Everyone is full on board the SEC West bashing train, but no one is talking about that "pitiful" SEC East who is about to run the bowl table against some very good opponents. We have a lot of parity this year, but I would not call us weak...

Well the irony of it all is how they bash the SEC West for being weak or overrated, then brag about how their team beat an SEC West team.

There's no irony there. The SEC west was sold as NFL junior and ended up being "just" a good college division. It was overrated, but beating a team from the top of a good college division is reason to brag. Being overrated is not the same as being bad.

It is most certainly irony. These guys are bragging about their team beating a mighty SEC team, then in the same breath talking about how weak the mighty SEC is. Maybe in 2011 the SEC West (LSU & Alabama) could have been sold as NFL Jr. This year they could have been sold as Mid Major Average.
Irony - Noun
*the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
*a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.

Calling a good team that was billed as being virtually unbeatable "overrated" and then bragging about beating said team is most certainly not irony, as it is not something that signifies the opposite of one's meaning, nor is it deliberately contrary to what one would expect. Fans brag about beating good teams.

You changed the argument. You initially said "the irony of it all is how they bash the SEC West for being weak or overrated, then brag about how their team beat an SEC West team." I commented on the aspect of your post that addressed fans calling the SEC team "overrated" and then bragging about beating said SEC team, and said that the SEC west "...was overrated, but beating a team from the top of a good college division is reason to brag." I never mentioned anything about the aspect of your post that involved calling SEC west teams "weak." However, your response attempts to refute mine by exclusively addressing the weakness aspect of your original post which I never addressed, one way or the other. In fact, that entire train of thought is a moot point that arises from your attempt to change the argument.

In short, as per Google's definition of irony, which aligns with my own, the bold words to which I replied from your original statement are not ironic, and your attempt to claim that they are arises from an apparent accidental conflation of your original two trains of thought. So no, it most certainly is not irony.

EDIT: Yes, anything *can* happen. The SEC west could have been sold as "Mid Major Average," but they weren't, not should they have been. It's still a very good division, even in a relatively down year.
