the future of conference championship games
I'm curious how everyone feels about the current setup that we have with the conference championship games. Should it be the winners of both divisions? Or would it be better if we took the top 2 teams regardless of what division they play in? And should there be a minimum of 12 teams to have a championship game?

I think there should be a minimum of 12 teams. I think it should be the champs from two divisions.

I agree. Otherwise, what's the purpose?

RE: the future of conference championship games
I think there should be at least 12 teams, since that was the impetus for a lot of the raids over the past couple of decades.

However, I don't think divisions should be a requirement, anymore than divisions are required to hold a conference basketball tournament. If a conference wants divisions, that is fine, but if they don't want one, that should be okay as well.

Cheers,
Neil

ideally once the big 12 dies/is devoured and we have 4 power conferences, we could have the top 2 from each division play a conference semi final, then the conference championship, then the final 4.

I don't see us going there...ideally we need 5-6 Big Boy conferences...about 80-96 teams.

Conference championship games should be fewer and conferences should be more regional with 9/10 for the sake of round robin play. Unless you're the SEC or a few others or have a nationally relevant team perhaps with a Heisman winner, nobody is gonna care about or watch your conference's title game.

C2....I think you'll see leagues going to 16. They have the option to split into two divisions with limited interplay. The key thing is TV inventory and markets. Rivalries be damned

Four major conferences of 16, not because it HAS to be four conferences of 16 but simply because that is how it goes if you parcel out the Big 12.

The fifth would be the AAC filling in the roll of the Cinderella mid major conference. That makes for 84 teams plus the two Independents attached to the ACC for a total of 86.

Once it is just the Big Ten, SEC, PAC and ACC at the top then why not create your own legislation to expand the divisional rule to allow for four divisions and a conference tournament of divisional winners?

What is to stop those four from doing that? The idea that they would stay with two divisions just doesn't make any sense. It is terrible for scheduling.

That might work...but realistically there are more than 64 legit programs out there.

That is why the concept of a Gatekeeper conference is so critical AND makes for great storylines.

The AAC currently has the best set up to add to. Make it a 20 team conference with four divisions of five teams each. It will be respectable enough that it would monetary sense to give them an autobid from their conference tournament just the same as the Majors would have. Of course I am talking about an expanded tournament to allow such.

Being able to backdoor promise that to the AAC would allow for the Majors to gather up some more support for the rule changes if it would still be necessary at that point.

I like that...so the AAC/MWC comes along for the ride?

Are you going to ask me to illustrate for you the entire plan? It is pretty much AAC/MWC but not entirely. A little more CUSA representation. The best part of the plan, once we get closer, will be all the debate around here as to what other teams will get the invites into the American. I found the name to be perfectly fitting for the role it will eventually fill. Made me wonder if some folks already knew what was coming.

If the playoff gets expanded to at least 12 teams, I don't see the need for CCG anymore, at least for P5 conferences.

Until then, the rules for a CCG non-division setup exception need to be better spelled out.

Not only does the minimum number of teams in the conference need to be specified, but also

the minimum number of conference games each team needs to play each year

The minimum number of times each team needs to play everybody in a rotating time period.

How many teams can join for football only

Etc., etc. Etc.

I don't see the CCG going away. How the teams are chosen will likely change.

The reason I like smaller divisions (pods, etc.) is the potential to play teams twice in the same season. I know tradition says you play the team once per year but college football traditions are falling every day. This is the way the NFL schedules. The issue is, with 4 team pods, half of your games are taken by the pod. This could be a good thing. It means teams like FSU can play the schools they like and play the ones they don't like as much less frequently. Of course, this works better with an expanded (2 round) conference championship.

Get rid of CCG's and have the 8 team playoff that weekend on campus sites.

12 isn't likely to ever happen. At most it ever goes is 8. Any other expansion will be at the conference level.

A four team pod only guarantees three games out of eight or nine conference games, far less than half. Also uiu don't need 16 teams to have pods: you can easily do it with 12 or even 14 teams.

Also I don't get why more conferences don't consider flexible scheduling the last 1 or 2 weeks of the season.

Have all the division games done by the sat before thanksgiving. Have tentative games scheduled the last 2 weeks, but have some flexibility to schedule the last 2 weeks. Then they do not need the extra game.
