That gets lost on so many people on this board when they canonize certain people that were here before. THIS AIN'T YOUR MOTHER'S UC.

Chatter

Your right Van Exel and AD Jackson would have struggled in the Big East. They probably wouldn't have made it to the tourney if they played in the "BIG EAST" back then

Never mind they made it the Final 4 and Elite 8 in there 2 years together

They might have won the tourney had they had some legit competition during the season to better prepare them.

This is ludicrous Chatter. They played the likes of Memphis (3 times), IU and Mich State in 91-92. The following year in 92-93 they played IU (who was ranked 4th at the time, Temple, UMass (top 10), Arizona (ranked) and Marquette (twice, and ranked both times). You need to get real if you think that Nick and company didn't prove themselves against good competition.
PS. In 93-94, they played ELEVEN ranked teams before losing in the tourney to Wisc.

Obviously my comment was tongue in cheek. Guess I need to start putting the wink smilie back in.

I have nothing but respect for the greatest Huggins-lead UC team. I probably remember more of what happened than you do. I lived and breathed UC basketball back then.

So now you didn't mean any of what you said? Obviously you don't remember everything or you wouldn't think Nick and company didn't play anyone prior to the tourney. Yeah you were a bigger fan than I was. I remember seeing you at EVERY game those two years. I was a frosh in 91-92 and made nearly every game for the next seven years. lmfao

Oh--Rath--go ahead and filter all my posts to the smack board since you don't seem to be able to handle anything anti-Cronin, anti-Nancy, anti-administration. BTW--I think Pravda is looking for editors!

In 1992, half the league, UC, Memphis and DePaul made the tournament.

In 1993, the GM added Dayton, three out of seven made it. UC, Memphis and Marquette.

I LOVED the Great Midwest. It was small, home and home with everyone, great coaches (Bartow at UAB) and the games were very good.

Hardaway was at Memphis, there were just some great games.

On the other hand, I think the Big East is very weak this year. I hate the conference set up where you don't even play some people and them have home and home with teams like Rutgers. Honestly, I don't see the league staying in its present form much longer. Maybe divisional play?

Having 2 of your seniors ineligible for an NIT game is by far more embarrassing than anything that happens this season...it was inexcusable.....AK was in charge...even though a lame duck..he was the leader and it was his responsibility to monitor academic progress........ the 2 "seniors" James and Jihad let the rest of the team down...

During the Metro, Great Midwest and CUSA, Cincy, Memphis, Marquette,
and Ville all went to Elite 8's and final fours, and Ville won 2 NCAA championships.

I don't disagree with uchoops, however I agree with HoopsJunky that the time for beating that horse is way in the rear view mirror.

It was fun back then because we were coming off of the horrible Yates years.

I'm sure many on here want to be like Xavier and Memphis and dominate a weak conference. The old, we're kicking everyone's ass in our weak conference, we must be awesome, brainwashing effect. Other than '92-'93, it paid little dividends over all. Oh yeah, that other Elite Eight where Dontae Jones and Dampier ate us alive too!! Woo-hoo!!!!

Face it. I loved our teams too, but we didn't deserve to be number one when Xavier upset us in '96.........that team was so overrated it's not even funny.

The best thing that ever happened to this program was joining the Big East. It's just a shame that Nancy and the BOT's didn't know how to handle the situation at the time and they set the b-ball program back 5 years.

Anyone who longs for the old days is frankly a ***** and doesn't want to improve the program, but stay where we were, which was first and second round tournament losses.

Bearcat1965,

Well I guess I am an a****** because from a basketball standpoint I would love to be in the hunt every year like we were for the last fifteen years. Would I like a little less turmoil and some better post season fate certainly but what we had was enjoyable and probably 95% of the other Division One programs wish they had anything close to our success.

Was AK supposed to hold their hands and lead them to class and watch them take their finals, if that is indeed the story? "No Jihad, choose A. That is a far better guess."

Wow. You've become the smack board police. Anything you can round up and take to the smack board, you jump on it! ;-)

There are two trains of thought.

1. Dominate a weaker conference, pretty much guaranteeing an NCAA berth every year (kinda like UC did under Huggins). But weaker conference mostly means (but not always), less top recruits.

2. Compete in a tough conference, get better recruits (theoretically), and maybe making a LEGIT run to the Final Four or better because you have better players and are more battletested.

We've seen both work.

I just feel like watching the Big East, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, or PAC-10.......you pretty much know one of the teams from those top 6 conferences are going to win it all. And it holds true probably 80% or more of the time. Why is that? Think about it.

I want a national championship. I don't feel that it is attainable in a conference that is not top 6. I'm sure that notion will be defied some year when a team does it, but we all know it's not the norm.

Memphis? Ehh, maybe not. But Cal did just reign in one of the top points in the country. Probably another DWash or DWag though. He'll probably be gone before long though.
