But the regional rivalry game will pique the interest of our respective fan bases and gin up interest locally.
In my day, we made fun of UofH, "YooHoo" as I recall, and Cougars called us "Nerd U" - all in good fun. But when we would beat them, the victory was special just as I am sure it was sweet for them too when they beat us, which was much too often. I hope we can tee it up again soon.
Back in the late 80s and early 90s, I'd usually go to most Rice-UH baseball, basketball, and football games - home and away. It seems to me that probably 2/3 of the time, I was given free tickets to UH home games when I walked up to the door, whether at Hofheinz or the Astrodome. Someone (I've always wondered if Mike Pede was one of them) would have a manilla envelope handing out tickets. I was never really sure why this was the case. When I'd go to Rice home games, there may be people trying to sell tickets, but I usually went out of my way to buy from the ticket office, just so the ticket count and revenue would go to Rice.

The first game in 1971 draw 60,000 to HRS. It was a close game which UH won by a couple of points. Rice won a close game at HRS in 1972. After that, the series declined. One reason was that most of the games after that were not close whichever team won it and then from 1976 UH was playing a full SWC schedule so the Rice game was not as important to UH. I am also a graduate of Rice and UH Law School. Also, I did graduate work at A&M.

It needs to be the first game played for both teams.

In 1971, the Rice-UH game was the first game played for both. I had been a freshman for a week before it was played. I remember a pep rally in the RMC with Bill Martin being one of the speakers.
I enjoyed visiting with Afflicted during the 2013 Rice-UH game.

I had a good time. That was before UH started coming back on us. Sorry to just leave, but I could see you nodding off and I didn't want to wake you. Beer does that to me too.

Plus another 1. The competition for college football eyes in Houston is intense, and neither UH nor Rice is in first place in that competition. For Rice and UH to meet in the first game of the season is a great opportunity for both programs to draw eyeballs. This is a 1 +1 = 3 opportunity.

Perhaps Rice can draw some UH fans when the Coogs aren't playing by advertising the game with the tag line "See Your Future Cougar Football Coaches". I have lost track of how many ex-Rice coaches and players Mensa has hired with the announcement of Yancy McKnight as S&TC.

It could not have been more than one beer at Reliant prices so it might have been due to advancing age. I prefer Valhalla as a drinking location when I come to Houston. I was trying to remember when that last game was in 2013 or 2012.
Today I received an e-mail message from Pede about all the things the UH alumni are doing. It mentioned the 29 point comeback the Cougars had against Pitt so I congratulate the Cougars on that.

I do not expect this rival to come back, there is to much bad blood between admins and UH is looking to add a p5 school!

That should work out, we'll definitely need 2 or 3 G5s in OOC once we get our call-up.
