Ohio State is just about always a paper tiger in bowl games, Florida State is lucky to even be there, and we all should have a lot of disdain for Alabama. I know we all have our reasons but that is they way I feel at least.
You can't still believe this after what has taken place during bowl season can you? I'll admit that while I hate ESPN I bought into their propaganda about the SEC West being dominant and the ACC being weak. I didn't buy into it wholeheartedly but I listened. The facts just don't back that up at all.
Alabama's top wins:
Mississippi State - zero p5 wins outside of SEC. Blown out by Georgia Tech, who FSU beat.
Missouri - zero p5 wins outside of SEC with bowl game pending. Lost to Indiana.
Auburn - solid win against Kansas State. Lost to Miss State
LSU - solid win against Wisconsin. Lost to Notre Dame in bowl game, who FSU beat.
FSU's top wins:
Georgia Tech - 2-0 against SEC. Defeated Georgia who will now be the highest ranked SEC team behind Alabama. Defeated Mississippi State (Alabama's best win) 49-35.
Clemson - 1-1 against SEC. Defeated 4th place Big 12 team 40-6
Notre Dame - 1-0 against SEC. 4-3 against P5 outside of ACC. Defeated LSU (Alabama's 4th best win) in bowl game.
Louisville - 1-1 against the SEC. 2-1 against P5 outside of ACC.
So you have Alabama who has 4 wins against teams ranked in the latest Playoff Poll. Two of those teams are yet to play and
two of them lost their bowls...to teams that FSU beat. These 4 teams are
2-3 against P5 teams outside of the SEC this season and
0-2 against the ACC.
FSU has 3 wins against teams ranked in the latest Playoff Poll and a win against Notre Dame. 3 of those teams won their bowl game (
2 against 2 of Alabama's top 4 wins and one against the 4th best team from the Big 12). These 4 teams were
8-5 against P5 teams outside of the ACC this season and
5-2 against the SEC.
The ACC was 4-1 vs the SEC in the regular season. Including bowl games
the ACC is 5-3 vs the SEC. The ACC was 10-7 against OOC P5 teams during the regular season, including 3-1 vs OOC P5 teams currently in the top 25. The SEC was 5-6 against OOC P5 teams during hte regular seasons, including 3-5 vs OOC P5 teams currently in the top 25. Including bowl games the ACC is currently 12-12 vs OOC P5 teams and 5-3 against OOC top 25 P5 teams. The SEC is currently 9-9 and 4-7 against OOC top 25 P5 teams.
On top of ALL of that throw in the fact that FSU DIDN'T LOSE A GAME! Alabama lost to a team that has now lost 4 of it's last 5 games against FBS competition. INCLUDING THEIR WIN during that span they were outscored
134-72. This is a team that ESPN and the committee wants us to believe finished the regular season as the 9th best team in the country just because they played in the SEC west, which you can see from the earlier information in this post wasn't really that great. This team lost 3 of their last 4 games against FBS teams in the regular season and finished 1 game above .500 in their conference and they are the 9th best team in the country? Then they lose to TCU.
They lose 42-3. TCU was 2nd (Big 12 says T1st but c'mon they were 2nd) in the Big 12.
The Big 12 didn't even get a team in the playoff.
So when you read the facts you have to come to the conclusion that giving the SEC the absolute benefit of the doubt you could say that they are even with the ACC (remember the ACC is 5-3 vs the SEC this year). Then you look at OOC schedules. Alabama played WVU (7-6), FAU (3-9), USM (3-9), and Western Carolina (7-5 FCS). FSU played Oklahoma State (6-6), Notre Dame (8-5), Florida (6-5), and Citadel (5-7 FCS). There is just no way you can say that Alabama is the definitive #1 and FSU is "lucky" to be in the playoffs. The whole thing is a
show. We can't just listen to whatever ESPN tells us and ignore the OVERWHELMING evidence on the field that is to the contrary.
FTR, all of this is coming from someone who HATES the ACC. But I hate even more that ESPN and the committee can just push across whatever narrative they want and us college football fans just eat it up. As if the things that happened on the field this year just didn't happen.
The mighty SEC had a losing record against the weak ACC. The unbelievable SEC West is now 0-1 vs the laughable ACC. It's all just ignored. I guarantee the narrative will be the same next year and few will question it.
