Don't you know Alabama breathed a huge sigh of relief to draw Ohio St and their 3rd string QB instead of TCU or Baylor. What's Bama favored by? 9?
They would have been favored by 3-ish over TCU or Baylor.
AGREED.
Prior to the bowls, TCU's best OOC win was over Minnesota (8-4), but they also had conference wins over then #4 Oklahoma, #15 Oklahoma State, #20 West Virginia, and #7 Kansas State. That's 4 wins over Top 20 teams, 2 of which were top 10. The only one still ranked is Kansas State (Baylor is ranked, but TCU lost to them).
How does that compare to Alabama? The Tide's best OOC win was over West Virginia (7-5 regular season), and their conference wins were over #21 Texas A&M, #16 LSU, #1 Mississippi St, #15 Auburn and #16 Missouri. That's 5 wins over top 20 teams, but only 1 in the top 10. The difference, I think, is that 4 of the teams Bama defeated were still ranked DESPITE MULTIPLE LOSSES.
Both TCU and Alabama had one loss, both on the road against ranked opponents (TCU lost at #5 Baylor, while Alabama lost at #11 Ole Miss).
So really, the only argument for ranking Alabama #1 and TCU #6 is if we assume that 8-4 LSU, 8-4 Auburn, 10-3 Missouri and 9-3 Ole Miss teams all deserved to be ranked in the Top 25 by the CFP committee. Based on bowl results for LSU, Ole Miss and Miss. State so far, I question whether those teams really deserve the tremendous "benefit of the doubt" which they were obviously given...
Not saying Alabama shouldn't be highly-ranked (they should), but putting them ahead of FSU and Oregon while demoting TCU to #6 just doesn't smell right.
