The law that they (ULL) wanted passed in Louisiana granting them their name change from USL to ULL specifically includes athletics and requires that they are called University of Louisiana at Lafayette. They wanted the deal, they got it, and they should be held to it.

Personally, I think it'd be classier if they just went with "Lafayette" for athletics like Memphis, Chattanooga, Charlotte, Miami, etc., but I know that's not what they're after.

I've always said Acadiana but you know....I guess the whole state more adequately satisfies their thirst.

You realize that ULL is NOT UL or Louisiana. I would hope that if ULL is selected to join CUSA, fans of conference members would refrain from calling them UL or Louisiana. It is a big deal to many of us from Louisiana Tech and other Louisiana schools as ULL is trying to portray themselves as superior in status to other system schools, especially their current conference brother ULM. No matter what ULL folks may tell you, any reference to their school without the Lafayette designation is illegal and unethical. The law that they (ULL) wanted passed in Louisiana granting them their name change from USL to ULL specifically includes athletics and requires that they are called University of Louisiana at Lafayette. They wanted the deal, they got it, and they should be held to it.

My only bias in this discussion is that I kind of see where ULL is coming from in my own alma mater's branding/identity issues.

1. I don't see how a "University of Louisiana" portrays any superiority to a "Louisiana Tech". I don't consider the University of Georgia to be superior to Georgia Tech, nor the University of Virginia to be superior to Virginia Tech. I don't think anybody but UGA or UVA fans do. The thought that ULL calling themselves "UL" subjugates you to a lesser status stems more from your own insecurity than any reality.

2. My first point being said, it does subjugate ULM. That's ULM's problem. We're not considering ULM for membership. We're not even talking about them. There is talk about UL. Where there is smoke, there is likely fire.

This brings me to:

3. If, in fact, we do invite the Cajuns, then it is in the best interest of everybody in the conference to give them as much leeway as possible in what they want to be called and branded. We've all heard folks dump on the G5 conferences for being full of directional and/or state @ city schools. Illinois is better than Northern Illinois. Kentucky is better than Western Kentucky. It doesn't have to be true to be said. There is a perception of hierarchy surrounding the names of Universities. This is why our AD has branded itself as "Charlotte" since 2000. This is why a growing number of students and alumni are in favor of changing the university's official name. Letting ULL refer to themselves as UL elevates their perception in that hierarchy. That benefits the entire conference, not just them.

I'd rather share a conference with a "University of Louisiana" than a "University of Louisiana at Lafayette". I'm sure folks would rather share a conference with a "University of Charlotte" than a "University of North Carolina at Charlotte" as well.

Actually, no. Despite what you Tech fans think I know for a fact that Tech is on our side here.

Um no, we are not.

I know you aren't. Your administration is. It might hurt too much for you to admit it to yourself but it's true. If we don't get into C-USA it won't be because Tech was blocking us.

Somebody is blowing smoke up your rectum here. They may be telling you this but the consequences of promoting ULL for membership into our conference would be devastating to even our school President. I won't give away sources or tell you all that I know, but thats a fact. TECH would not knowingly give away any advantage to ULL. Political pressure also works both ways too. For every politician you think you have in your pocket there are three just like them in North, Southwest, and Southeast LA. You can troll here all you want about it, I could care less.

I don't need a source to tell me that your fan base would be upset with your president if he didn't oppose us getting into C-USA. Your source is only stating the obvious.

RE: La Tech Fans....
49erlew, what you don't understand is that Louisiana Tech is in the University of Louisiana system along with several other schools including ULL, ULM, and several FCS schools. Their using the name UL or Louisiana implies that they are the flagship of the system which is damn sure not the case. The University of Louisiana system does not designate a flagship school and if it did it would be the Louisiana Tech and not ULL. If you're not from or in the state of Louisiana you probably don't really understand all the politics and illegality with the name deal.

FWIW, despite what the Tech fans say no one at UL has ever said we want to be anybody's flagship and that was never the goal.

Anyone in Louisiana knows the only flagship in the State of Louisiana is the Lord Almighty, King of Kings, Louisiana State University, Blessings and Peace be upon it.

I've read the law and don't recall seeing anything that said the athletic department had to use UL Lafayette in its branding. All official university correspondence, etc definitely has to use the ULL label and the university does this to the best of my knowledge. I think it was a stroke of genius that the athletic department seized on the idea of branding the team as the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns and ran with it because it's taking hold. I see it more and more in the main stream media.

As for the claims I've seen some make that private individuals are somehow doing something illegal by using UL, that's laughable.

Oh, and just for the record, the official name of LaTech is Louisiana Tech University at Ruston. If you don't believe it I can post the link.

Seriously, though, I don't understand how this UL dispute has managed to go on so long. If Monroe has a problem with it, they should just break out some "Louisiana" logos & uniforms of their own and force the issue. Alternatively, if Lafayeytte is actually violating the law, that should be easy enough to remedy with the filing of a few court documents or even just the threat to do so. If 8 other universities of equal legal footing don't want to put up with it, why on earth do they?

The folks in Monroe actually tried if for a while and then just gave up and now seem happy to be called ULM. I think that overall they're more worried about surviving as a four year university than what's going on down in Lafayette.

As for the rest of your comments, you're spot-on. The athletic department isn't doing anything illegal by calling the team the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. We are Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.

I understand your opinion, but this goes a lot further than branding a school for athletic purposes. Calling themselves UL or Louisiana implies that they are the "flagship," which is not true. In our low information world such a perception, though completely false, would benefit UL@L and be detrimental to other schools in the system.

Thank God we use inches instead of reputation. If we used reputation points my dick would be a -5.

I've been reading this board for a few weeks now. It seems like every time the name thing gets brought up it starts with a Tech fan.

Okay, cool. I can think of another system that doesn't designate a flagship. We're in it. The fact that the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill has branded itself in such a way that implies flagship status within the University of North Carolina system infers that we, as UNC Charlotte (notice, virtually no difference in format between us and UNC - Chapel Hill) are inferior. Does it imply that NC State, also a member of the same system, is inferior?

The name "Louisiana Tech" shields you from any perceived loss of status in the event that ULL succeeds in building a brand out of UL. At worst, it elevates UL to equal footing with you. If that's a problem then argue as such. Coming from a fan of a school that actually does have to deal with the absolute crock of 01-rivals that comes from a school doing what UL is trying to do, your arguments are petty at best and insulting at worst.

You're tilting at windmills here. You're not trying to protect your brand, because your brand isn't under attack. You're trying to prevent an in-state rival from building theirs. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with that, but if you're going to do it at least be honest about it.

You're welcome.

Don't let it go to your head, though. I'm not rolling out a welcome mat.

Would probably be because you keep calling yourself by the wrong name when you come here.
