Chipotle apologizes for 'hands up, don't shoot' protest
[Image: 2ep7xc6.jpg]

Quote:After fiery criticism, Chipotle Mexican Grill has released a statement about a "spontaneous, unplanned action" in which an employee raised his hands in a "hands up, don't shoot" protest when nine New York police officers entered a Brooklyn location of the popular burrito chain.

In the statement, Chipotle co-CEOs Steve Ells and Monty Moran apologized to the officers involved in the incident, as well as "many of the people who have contacted us regarding the issue."

News of the employee's actions went viral Dec. 17 when Ray Melendez, a man who claims on Facebook to be a former NYPD officer, wrote a post that "an officer involved at the incident" told him that "several" employees "raised their hands and said 'hands up, don't shoot' to the officers," according to many news sources including The Guardian.

The post is now deleted.

The Chipotle statement details that the company has reviewed the incident, which occurred Dec. 16 close to 6:15 p.m., "including interview with the crew and a review of video footage from security cameras."

The review gleaned that the action "was not a coordinated effort by the staff" and that the officers were not refused service — "but instead chose to leave after encountering this gesture while still waiting in line."

I wonder how long they're gonna use the false "hands up don't shoot" narrative. They look more and more stupid when they do that. I hope that guy loses his job.

I'm real sure that douchebag went from upholding the law to flipping burritos.

I love the fact the police just all basically left without saying a word to the employee in question.

I think they might have some job openings at that fast food chain...

RE: Chipotle apologizes for 'hands up, don't shoot' protest
When I first read about this on a site yesterday, I sent Chipolte an email on this issue. This is the reply I got...

Quote:XXXX,

Thanks for letting us know how you feel. Our CEOs have released a statement:

“On December 16 at approximately 6:15 p.m., a group of nine New York police officers entered one of our restaurants in Brooklyn and saw one of our crew members raise their hands in what appears to have been a gesture of protest directed toward the NYPD.

Since being notified of this incident, we have conducted a review of the incident including interviews with the crew and a review of video footage from security cameras. Our investigation has shown that this appears to have been a spontaneous, unplanned action taken by an individual crew member and was not a coordinated effort by the staff of the restaurant. Our investigation also shows that the officers were not refused service, but instead chose to leave after encountering this gesture and while still waiting in line.

We work hard to ensure that every customer in our restaurants feels welcome and is treated with respect. Clearly, the actions of this crew member undermined that effort. In no way was the behavior of this crew member consistent with our culture and our values as a company. We have taken appropriate actions with regard to the crew member involved, but we are not at liberty to discuss the specific actions taken.

Additionally, we have reiterated to the team the importance of making all of our customers feel welcome in our restaurants. We have also apologized to many of the people who have contacted us regarding this issue. Above all, we would like to apologize to the officers involved in this incident. We have proudly served law enforcement officers in our restaurants around the country for the last 21 years and we continue to do so every day. We greatly respect the service they provide and welcome them into our restaurants.

Steve Ells & Monty Moran
Co-CEOs”

The cops weren't insulted for being gay, they were insulted for being cops.

Why would you hope he gets fired? It has nothing to do with you, not even indirectly. You wouldn't even no about it if it happened.

Why shouldn't he have an opinion on the guy losing his job after showing the disrespect for the officers that came in to spend their money at his employer's business? This bullsh#t arms in the air is based on a complete lie out of the Ferguson shooting. The way I see it just for the bad publicity and loss of business he caused Chipotle, he deserves to lose his job. He is employed to serve customers, not insult them.

When did I say he shouldn't have an opinion? I just find it strange to "hope" someone gets fired. That's why I asked him. Maybe he owns stock in the company. That's a pretty good reason to hope someone gets fired.

Now it wouldn't be weird if he said, "I'd fire that guy"--hell I'd have fired him-- but "hope" is different.

Yeah I disagree with hoping someone gets fired just because you disagree with his position.

I totally think Chipotle is a piss poor version of Quedoba Grill. We have 2 new Chipotle locations and both Suck anyway.

And, of course, that is a gross mischaracterization. Disagreeing with his position would be applicable if he disagreed with the officers but served them. Refusing to serve them goes beyond disagreement.

Those same folks will insult cops until, you know, they actually need a cop for protection, etc.

Refusing to serve them would be a good reason to fire or suspend him.

The article I read however said the cops simply left and did not even order.

Which is not what you said above.

Or is your disagreement more on the semantic difference between hoping someone gets fired rather than stating that someone should be fired?
