It's one of the reasons the Big 12 faces little financial pressure to expand. Leagues do get bonuses of $6 million per team in the playoff bowl and $4 million per team in the New Year's 6 bowls.
Pretty sure each team in the four team playoff (or conference) gets an additional 6 million. Also I've read that a Big 12 championship game would bring about 25 million from all sources to the conference.
I think TC already posted something to this effect, but if Memphis & Cincy SPLIT 1 share of the TV and Champ Game ($25M) money (such that it's divided by 11), the orig 10 would still receive the same $25M that they receive today. Now, if you start dividing the playoff money, then they might realize a net drop. However, after a few years in the B12, the value of Memphis and Cincy would increase and they could be worthy of a full share.
Maybe I'm reading that wrong but aren't you assuming that the Memphis and Cincinnati TV markets bring zero value to the Big 12. If so, the Memphis market for football was ranked #3 on ESPN. Yes I know that's the SEC but if another P5 enters I'm sure they get some of that college football attention.
Annnnn(loud buzzer sound) Wrong. Well, u get partial credit.
Sure, some of it is SEC. HOWEVER-Tigers are KINGS of this market.
We've achieved this because more Tiger games are getting air time.
Plus, of course, Memphians watch other games with no Tigers or SEC involved.
So, let it be known that should Memphis join Big12, they (Big12) quickly own Memphis market AND national viewership ranking gets a quick spike. This means, among other things, commercial time for Big12 games gets more expensive. This, in turn, makes the league more valuable to ESPN. Thus, a bigger cut of the pie for the Big12.
THUS, AUTOMATICALLY the Tigers bring more value to the conference.
Therefore, if those seemingly intelligent men of the Big12 are aware of these facts; plus getting a BIG footprint in the heart of SEC country; then the decision should have already been made.
