For what it's worth I think Penn State definitely helped in that regard with Franklin. I think he will pan out to be a great hire.

I think the next big hire in the Big Ten needs to come from Rutgers.

Franklin? That ass cheese blows major ass as a HC. His best attribute is his ability to motivate someone. But at the end of the day, he needs to have actual substance behind his antics or he looks like the petulant moron he is. PSU will be looking for a new coach in a few years because Franklin will have been shown to be the fraud he really is.

It is so enlightening to see a Pitt guy chastising Penn State about their coaching hire.

You do realize you guys have been made fools of? Chryst used you guys as a temporary stop. "Nah, I cant leave during my first year. Give me three years here and I will come back home Coach Alvarez."

At worst, that makes Pitt an orphanage for Head Coaches. Your anger is delicious.

It's not anger. I believe that Franklin is a terrible coach. I also believe that Pitt shot itself in the foot a number of times on its coaching hires thanks to the ex AD. That has been rectified, so I hope things will be much better.

Saying my anger is "delicious" might make you one of these.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but won't Harbaugh be the only college head coach to have taken an NFL team to the Super Bowl? He should be able to recruit at a much higher level than he did at Stanford given his recent NFL experience and less restrictive admissions requirements.

(12-29-2014 06:57 PM)He1nousOne Wrote:  1. As to what this does for the Big Ten as a whole? The Big Ten needs a competitive Ohio State vs Michigan rivalry. This makes it easy to imagine the rivalry getting back to the glory days when it was just as much about the two coaches going head to head. That is what I have been calling for the Big Ten to do. They need to recreate their brands with their Head Coaching hires. They have as much or more money than anyone else. They finally have the need and the desire to put it all to use. The Arms race in the Big Ten just got kicked up a notch, a very big notch.

1. Disagree so HARD here. You are such a Big Ten shill if you buy into the "OSU/UM is the only thing that matters" logic. Few people really care about OSU/UM outside of Big Ten country. Players and fans want GOOD football. (See point #4 below).

1. Only thing that matters? No. Does it matter? Absolutely, sorry Penn State guy but it matters for the conference as a whole. Raise yourselves up to a point where you can say you are carrying the conference as a King and then we can talk. As of right now, this move by Michigan is actually getting folks excited that aren't connected to the Big Ten. When has Penn State done that lately? Don't take this as a sleight or fightin' words. It's just how it is.

The Big 10 needs its big brands to be good. A product of their brands being good is that rivalry games like OSU versus UM become bigger. Just like a UM versus Michigan State will be bigger, same with OSU versus Penn State. But the significance of "the game" versus the rest of the rivalries isn't that important. What matters is good teams are playing good teams.

Penn State has been mediocre in football since the mid 90's a few years after they joined the Big 10 mainly as a product of their head coach turning 70 and barely recruiting. They might not have carried the Big 10 as a king on the field but without them, the Big 10 would be screwed. Penn State is the bridge to the east coast out of the dying Midwest. There would be no Rutgers and no Maryland. Wisconsin might not have risen to prominence without the addition of Penn State since the backbone of Alverez's Rose bowls teams in the 90's was build off of eastern recruits. Do you think New Jersey kids like Ron Dayne sign up to go to Madison without exposure in the east. I am not saying the Big 10 would be garbage without PSU, but it would be nowhere near as strong as it is today. It would be the big 2 and little 8 locked in the Midwest. Sounds a lot like the Big 12 now.

The Midwest isn't dying, don't say dumb ****. The move into the East isn't because the Midwest is dying, it is because the East is the East. It has big markets, big money and is where the heart of the government lies.

The Big Ten would be near garbage without Penn State? Get over yourself, Penn State currently is barely a blip on the Big Ten radar. Keep telling yourself all that though if it makes you feel better about the reality of Penn State football currently.

It will be at least 3 years before Harbaugh brings Michigan back from the abyss - if he can.

The UM fans have to give him the time he needs - and they haven't shown themselves to be a patient group.

O$U and MSU will continue to be the B1G standard bearers for the time being - just hope UM, Nebraska and Wisconsin raise their programs. Look forward to seeing a nationally relevant B1G once again.

Bill Walsh came from Stanford to the 49ers thrn after he left them a couple of years later went back to Stanford...Jimmy Johnson left the Hirricanes for the Cowboys and Pete Carroll left USC for Seattle.

Well being that Michigan, the home of two of the biggest schools in the conference is losing population plus manufacturing jobs are moving out of the rust belt, which if you look at demographics of football players they tend to come from poorer blue collar families in rural areas ie factory workers, than yes the Midwest is dying in regards to producing football talent. Delaney himself said a major part of the move to the east was demographics now and in the future. The east has the big markets and the money and without Penn State, nobody out east would give a crap about Ohio State or Michigan. So you can take a big chunk out of the BTN money and television contracts in general.

You should brush up on your reading skills because I said the Big 10 wouldn't be garbage without Penn State, I said it wouldn't be near as strong. You basically said so in your response that the money resides in the east. So it stands to reason that without the east coast money, the Big 10 wouldn't be as rich. Good luck selling televisions ratings in Columbus Ohio as the basis for the next tier 1 negotiations.

Edit. Here's an article about the dying Midwest in regards to football talent specifically and population overall since you don't want to believe it. http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2014/0...g_ten.html

Detroit continues to shrink. Michigan has grown over the past couple years.

True-- people often misspeak when they say the Midwest is losing population. That being said, the growth in the Midwest is extremely modest-- most states in the region are growing under 0.50% (Michigan only grew by 0.1% in 2014). The "growth" states are seeing much higher rates in the 1.5-2.0% range.

A couple coaches in a row have failed at Michigan. The same with Nebraska.

People said the same about Alabama prior to 2006...went through Mike DuBose,Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula...then they went to the NFL and Got Saban....07-coffee3

Alabama is in the SEC. Michigan is not.

Yeah, and when it comes to a recruiting footprint, the SEC > B1G by high multiples. The addition of schools in NJ and MD help all of the conference out, but the footprint still isn't what it used to be, and the real "turf" still sits just south of the current footprint for that conference.

Yes, I suspect Harbaugh to recruit Michigan back to a national level, like it used to, but Harbaugh's got some issues. And people think he will be able to pluck even better talent than what he could do at Stanford...that will be true, but he's also going to get more show-boaters and guys like Sherman, too.

I can't wait until he gets stuck with a kid who doesn't worship the ground he walks on. Good times to ensue, guaranteed.

What evidence to you have to support that? On any team, the coach is the coach. I don't see where Harbaugh's enthusiasm and desire to win translates to an expectation to be worshiped.

Being in the B1G actually make it easier for him to win...doesn't have to go through that SEC Grind..plus as stated Michigan recruits at a National Level and that is going to be on Steriods with them now having a Super Bowl Coach...as far as being "Stuck" with showboat played like Richard Sherman...as long as they produce in the Classroom and the Gridiron as Sherman did he is not going to care...07-coffee3

I think Harbaugh will find that it's not as easy to recruit for Michigan as it was at Stanford. California has a ton of recruits. Michigan doesn't.

Bit...JMO....he will impress Recruits with that NFL/Super Bowl Pedigree...the Elite players especially QB will find that enticing...remember all he has to say I coached in the Super Bowl...turned around Alex Smith NFL Career and Developed Andrew Luck to be the 1st Pick in the NFL Draft...Elite players care about getting to the NFL..He has something no other College Coach can say...3 NFC Title Appearances and a Super Bowl Appearance with a long NFL Career himself...

From a 49ers beat writer, to Michigan:

http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-fra...87357.html

Quote:Congratulations on the purchase of your new Harbaugh! It has been carefully constructed in the Upper Midwest and California for optimum football performance. You are guaranteed to have many memorable moments with your Harbaugh, but it is important to note that it is not designed for use beyond four years.

Here are some tips and guidelines to operating your Harbaugh:

Your Harbaugh does not function like other head coaches. An innocuous query about the weather, for instance, could trigger a florid quote from Admiral William Halsey. And yet a routine question about a running back’s knee injury may cause your Harbaugh to wince, pause and grimace as if a malodorous scent has wafted into the room. Your Harbaugh’s default in this instance is: “We don’t really talk about that here” or “I can’t get inside his body” or “He’s working through something.” This is a design flaw our technicians in California have not yet worked out.

You may notice that your Harbaugh never shuts off. This is normal.

More at the link.

Weiss didn't do it as a Head Coach...only as Bill Belichick OC...Harbaugh built up Stanford with their much more strict Academic Standards to become a Pac 12 Power...he played over a Decade in the NFL and took his team as their QB to the AFC Title Game...took over San Francisco and lead them as Head Coach to 3 Straight NFC Title Games and a Super Bowl...unlike Weiss he done it as a Player and HC on both the College and NFL Level...Weiss on the other hand was a 1st Time Head Coach when he took over ND...Big Difference...

It's fun to read the usual suspects looking for anything they can possibly say to attack this because it has something to do with The Big Ten.

Currently, Michigan is sitting poorly with recruits. Let's see how quickly Harbaugh can turn that around.

After reading what some of the Nation Top Players that are Uncommitted and in some cases Committed to this hire by Michigan...Recruiting for Harbaugh will not be an issue...really if you go by the Recruiting Rankings the years of Brady Hoke it was at a Top 15 Nationally Level...it will only improve under Harbaugh.
