We're losing our collective minds when thugs get more sympathy than law abiding citizens.

Two things:

1. Just because you have dehumanized the guy, doesn't mean that he wasn't a loss to someone. He meant a hell of a lot to somebody. Now I can understand that you may have a one dimensional view of him because the only life event you know him by labels him as a thug, but sympathy for his memorial is not just sympathy toward him (if you can't stomach that), it's sympathy toward those who lost him.

2. This police dept is going to have to be particularly careful in everything they do. They have to have consistency in their image and cannot allow that comment to stand. They are already under fire.

Yeah, given the stituation, dumb remark by that officer. However, the memorial has already caused at least one car accident that I've heard about. Having stuff out in the middle of the street tends to make that occur.

You can't just leave stuff in the middle of the road. I lost a friend in a car crash and her memorial is on the side of the road so that nobody runs over it.

I know even roadside memorials have been banned in many places due to traffic concerns caused by possible distractions, etc.

If I was a police officer in Ferguson, I'd become a Muslim. Libs don't criticize Muslims.

And please, don't compare our memorials with makeshift memorials of thugs and criminals. Not the same thing at all.
