Selling items on the internet
There used to be a local business that had a storefront where one could take items to sell on the internet. They would photograph and post the item on the internet and ship it out when it sold, and send you a check, minus a percentage of the sale. They are now out of business.
Does anyone know of any other such business in Memphis? Thanks!

Amazon is seller friendly. They will warehouse and ship your product, and you can even learn how to finagle with the testimonies to get yourself to the top page of Amazon or a search engine. It's an everchanging art.

RE: Selling items on the internet
I used to sell on Ebay for several years as a hobby. It was fun until it became a second full time job. I wish I could afford to do it full time because I really enjoyed it.

RE: Selling items on the internet
I'm just trying to get out of mailing anything anywhere. I absolutely hate going to the P.O. or a shipping store, or having anyone come by my house to pick up a package. I have no time for packaging and mailing and don't want any interruptions at home because that is where I work.

One of the businesses I run is a used bookstore, now only online, been doing it for almost 20 years. If you aren't going to mail anything, then it's going to be very hard to make significant money. Amazon will absolutely suck you dry on fees, unless you ship a LOT. Ebay is probably your best bet, but I stopped selling there in 2008 because it is so seller-hostile.
For other alternatives, you might try this site: http://www.powersellersunite.com, despite the name you do not have to be a power seller to be active there. It has lots of updates on places to sell online.

Wouldn't that still requine you to leave your house to take your items to the store front sales place?

RE: Selling items on the internet
Yes, I would still have to leave my house, (which I do every day for work and life, ha!) but I wouldn't have to package things up and I would be dealing with intelligent human beings, not subhuman postal employees.
I should have been clearer in my posting. I am not looking to make much money or start an internet business. I am just trying to dispose of 40 years of clutter and make a little bit of money in the process, along with putting some fairly nice things in the hands of people who appreciate/want them.
I appreciate all the replies. I just wish that other place had not gone out of business. Seems like that would be a great business to be in, for those of us downsizing and those who are not internet-savvy, or too busy working our full-time jobs to fool with packing and shipping. The numbers of Baby Boomers who are trying to dispose of all kinds of household stuff has to be astronomical. Many of us are dealing not only with our own downsizing, but with disposing of our parents' estates. My friends frequently ask me how to get rid of china, home decor, nice clothes, collectibles, on and on. I'm well aware of all the local estate sales people, and my dealings with them have shown me their rip-off side.

If you need to get rid of book collections, that's easy. Me!
But the other businesses weren't viable because the overhead was too high. They would have had to charge 75% of the net to keep the doors open and that's just not viable. Sorry. If your stuff is nice, however, contact one of the local auction houses. They sell all kinds of stuff.

Why not put on your own estate sale. You set the price, you keep all the profits. Like a really fancy garage sale. You would have some work to do, like getting everything you need to get rid off in one room so the rest of your house is off limits.
Garage sale people expect cheap. Estate or moving sale people expect to pay more.
But if it was me, and there were really nice things to sell, I would do it myself on Ebay. It's really not bad and can become addictive. I made a lot of money going to estate sales and picking things up, recognizing when something is valuable. I have sold things making more money than I even expected. One example, found these replica bears collectibles with certificates or authenticity. On Saturday they wanted $250 each. I went home, researched them and went back on Sunday. By Sunday most estate sales mark down 50%. Got both bears for $250 and sold for $900 each. And that's how it's done.

RE: Selling items on the internet
I've sold lots of things on eBay...
I can say that's not going to turn a "profit." However, its great for trying to get some money for the stuff around your house.
I used to buy stuff at auctions and sales to sell on ebay. I had lots of fun, but I don't think I ever made much money. After I cleaned out my storage unit, I haven't gone back in.

Once upon a time you could make a nice living on ebay, I've sold probably 10,000 items on ebay, but those days are long gone. Not to say you can't turn a profit, but on a consistent basis you have to have other online venues to supplement it. I haven't sold on ebay since 2008 and instead developed my own website.

If you have any items from the 60s, I might be interested! I'm a fan of the mid-century modern stuff.
