RE: Blog Piece on Pitt fans
I like the idea of 40-45,000. As a BC fan, I'd like to actually reduce the seats in Alumni Stadium to 40,000 and add individual seats instead of benches. In my mind, it's all about the amenities now. People need comfort and amenities to get off the sofa in front of the 60" HDTV. Reduce the number of seats, give people some comfort, bring in wifi, increase the bathrooms, expand the concourse areas, give better food options, etc. it's all about the experience these days.

This is exactly what Cincinnati is doing with the renovated Nippert Stadium. 40,000 seats, 5000 Club seats, expanded concourses, concessions, rest rooms, a Presidential box for UC's President and other dignitaries/donors, etc. All this right smack in the middle of campus with students having access at all times for recreation, intramurals, use of seats and benches for student study. You all will see it all when UC hosts the Miami Hurricanes in September on ESPN.

Perfect size for Cincy...if a Big School comes in you can move it to the Bengals stadium.
Time to get you in the ACC.

Agreed. Have a good product on the field and make the experience for the fans the best it can be.
Cheers,
Neil

I respect my fellow Pitt posters, but no way in hell will Pitt ever build something that only seats 45K or less. Pitt may not be able to fill Heinz Stadium, but there is no reason why Pitt cannot average 50K plus fans/game. The university has to consistently spend on athletics and take it seriously. Pitt has been thru this time and again when you look at history. When they spend the money, they can field a very competitive FB team. When they deemphasize athletics, the FB team suffers.
40-45k is the new 50-55k
Pitt should build a 40-45k stadium on campus. Cuse is having the same discussions. If the Carrier Dome gets a makeover I would guess it would be downsized to 44k.
It will never happen. Even if the admins wanted to, there is no room in Oakland to build it. I disagree that 40 - 45K is the new sweet spot.
Too bad Pitt couldn't have found some way to save the old on-campus stadium. I attended the VT/Pitt game there in 1999 and was awed by the history and architecture of the place. It should have been on the National Register of Historic Places IMO. And with 56,000 seats it was the perfect size for Pitt.
I realize the old Fitzgerald Field House was woefully inadequate for basketball, but couldn't it have been enlarged or the site cleared for a new BB arena thus saving the stadium? I remember a lot of controversy in the late '90s about saving Pitt Stadium but I forget the particulars.
