What do you mean what kind of **** is this? That's a person doing an incredibly generous thing for someone who really deserves it.

The story is skewed. Why would UAB be in some kind of partnership with the SEC in that capacity but in athletics we're untouchable. The issue is UAB has too many fans of other schools working in its highest capacity positions. The measure is cool on the surface but UAB's football team was just canceled a few weeks ago. I wonder if that physician ever attended any games....probably not.

I'm sure kdblazer is super pissed because it's a game Alabama will be playing in, but who cares.
But actually, one of the al.com commenters had a good point..this is probably a violation of state ethics law.

No, the story is cool on the surface but add that with recent events it seems skewed.
A UAB surgeon who probably is a professor has sugar bowl tickets......thats the part that makes me super pissed.

Did you read the story? UAB had to work with the SEC to get the tickets, he didn't already have them. The surgeon simply paid for them. And who cares if a surgeon had tickets. Ever think that we might have some MDs on staff that got a bachelor's degree in Tuscaloosa? Not everyone is the President of the University.
Chill out, flipping out about this one is a strategic PR error.

Yes, you are correct...I'm emotionally spent with all the drama of the recent months. Goodwill is goodwill.

RE: What kind of **** is This?
The only thing I take umbrage to is the depiction of Alabama as the officer's "new home team." And that statement connects to Bill Curry's and tells you why Birmingham cannot have a home team--because there can be no alternative to Bammerism. It is a scourge upon our society and is one of many reasons why our city suffers from massive brain drain.
The Machine and old guard elite run everything. And if you are progressive, self-made or fall outside that construct, you are not welcome.

I understand being pissed at the BOT and our puppet president, but who cares what team this surgeon or this officer is a fan of. People have a right to be a fan of whatever team they want to be a fan of. Who the hell cares.

RE: UAB Surgeons
I get what KDBlazer is getting at, when I initially read the headlines I thought it was a pro-bama story with a UAB angle. But, like Mixuptransistor said there are bigger fish to fry. Making snide or rude comments only serves to go against us.

Once you read the story there's really nothing to be upset about. There's nothing about it that involves Bama other than that they are playing in the game he got tickets to.

I'm not sure if you're from Alabama, I wasn't trying to make a joke. Two or three years ago when the Republicans took over Alabama government they passed a law making it illegal for any public employee in the state to take any gift of any value at all. They later changed it so that you could get little gifts, such as a student might give a teacher (that was the specific scenario they were trying to legalize) but I'm pretty sure these tickets are way above the exemption value.

I think that it is a great story and if the State Ethics Committee finds fault with this gift, I hope they find lumps of coal in their stockings.
I do think that the quote from Birmingham Police Chief Roper was interesting:
"It was obvious that Brandon's great physical condition from playing football at Ohio State assisted him in surviving that horrific accident. In reflection, it's really poetic that he can see his former hometown team play his new home team,''
Since when did Alabama become Birmingham's home team? Oh, that's right........ At least I know who the former Ohio State player will be pulling for.
