WBB - Rice loses to Texas Southern
Yesterday, the Rice women's basketball team lost 69-63 to #224 Texas Southern.
This season, #245 Rice is just 4-5, in spite of playing the 327th "toughest" schedule (out of 349 teams).
A look at the Sagarin Women's College Basketball Rankings shows that Rice is the #11 team in C-USA (out of 14).
The final two non-conference games are at home against #297 Lamar (3-7) and at #11 Texas (10-0). Rice has lost its last 15 games against ranked opponents, losing by an average of 25 points per game.
Last 7 years under Greg Williams:
2013-14 (14-16)
2012-13 (14-16)
2011-12 (16-16)
2010-11 (18-14)
2009-10 (13-17)
2008-09 (7-23)
2007-08 (14-18)

Williams will likely be gone at the EOY. From what we have seen with Dr. K so far, 1 > .500 season in 7 sure isn't going to cut it.

I like their freshman Shani Rainey but she has a horrible mental block with her free throws right now and I suspect it's effecting her entire game. They have signed some really good kids for next year too, but unfortunately 5-6 straight years of sub-par recruiting (outside of the occasional gem like Jessica Kuster) has caught up to that squad.
If we do hire a new coach, I really like what Johnetta Hayes has done at TSU. She could do a pretty good job at Rice I think.

Willliams better be gone. Dr K will loose all creditability with me if he isn't. In fact I would fire him now and let the assistant try his/her luck.

Fortunately you're not in charge of anything.
TSU is a big, fast, strong team with a lot of talent, and should be in the NCAA Tournament.

It's not the recruiting...it's the coaching required to improve the players and that starts with the head coach. We've had 5-6 years of getting solid recruits but most of these girls are not playing as well as when they left high school (lack of confidence and why?). Did you think there wouldn't be issues this year after they have been programmed to run the ball through Kuster and only shoot if it is about to be a shot clock violation? Someone needs to watch practice and how games are coached. Don't cut down the kids in this situation until they have someone that believes in them. It's time to take a page from how the men's coach was recruited.

The combined record of the other SWAC teams (Division 1 opponents) is 9-68. Winning that conference to get an automatic bid is not a notable achievement.

Of course he has also talked about the priority Rice puts on coaching continuity... for the student-athletes.

Winning CUSA should not be a notable achievement either.
