Disintermediation killed the newspaper...period.
One definition of "disintermediation" is removing the middleman or intermediary -- i.e., the published product replaced by information on the internet. Only problem is, newspapers started by giving away content on the internet for free.
As to your idea there is "LOTS of great local and national coverage" in much more relevant places....really?
USA Today (a newspaper that is also struggling financially) coverage of NIU is a fraction of what existed when the Sun-Times was a quality publication.
"huskiewire" is produced by members of The Daily Chronicle (a newspaper), and most people believe there's been a decrease in quantity and quality.
"Mitchell" is Fred Mitchell of The Chicago Tribune (a newspaper).
You believe "Espn" respects us, then you're in the minority.
blogs? Can you name one that's really respected? Blogs are often opinions of people of questionable credibility who generally do no fact-checking, so they're like the saying about a$$holes, everyone has one, some are full of it, some smell, etc.
Not respecting the value of a newspaper's coverage of the Huskies is missing the point. So no one on here pays attention to where NIU stories appear in the Tribune, no one notices the Alumni Association running a full page ad, no one seems to think our membership would help the Big 12's coverage in Chicago..... Did you ever consider that all those internet outlets you love still have to be created, updated, and written by someone?
