I actually love Corky's, the original on Poplar.
Yup. Corky's is a little over-commercialized, but it is good. The BBQ isn't bad, but I actually like some of their other items the most. The onion loaf and the tamales are awesome.
A little? lol...

Kings for music, dancing and libations. That's my trip advice ... we visit several times a year.
All sounds good except The Rendevous for Ribs, I have always thought that place was way overrated and the ribs are awful. Every time I have out of town visitors, they want to go there. And every single time it has been awful.
Been there 487,000 times. NEVER awful. Never bad.
I've always had phenominal ribs there. I also like their ham.

These are a must. I have a friend in London who comes over to Memphis to do Graceland every other year. Two years ago I intercepted him and after he was done with Graceland I took him to Stax, Rock N Soul and the Gibson factory. Also took him to where American Records was and took a trip down to Tupelo.
I also took him to the Lorraine and when he was in Dallas to Dealey Plaza. He told me he thought he had absorbed the last 50 years of American history.

RE: Out of towner visiting Memphis, any advice?
An update about three months after my trip:
Me and my friends had a great time. Went to Central BBQ and Corky's, both were great. Beale Street was too touristy for my taste but Overton Square and the Midtown area were a lot of fun, I heard that its really come along the past five years. Saw a bunch of local attractions like the Civil Rights Museum, Sun Studio, the Gibson Factory, etc. but sadly the Pyramid was a month away from opening and the Grizzlies weren't in town. Google Maps took us through a rough neighborhood (I think it was called Orange Mound) so that was a bit interesting, though those are the kind of weird memories you look back and laugh about. Thanks for the advice, Memphis was a blast.

Well, then, you have to come back. You missed Stax, too. FYI, Overton Square was built in the 1970's and is actually becoming vibrant once again. And Orange Mound was the first African-American community of single family homes built in America, named for the osage orange trees which grew there. It has birthed a lot of prominent Memphians, including our own late beloved Coach Larry Finch.
Broad Street continues to grow with restaurants and retail, as does Cooper-Young. The Crosstown Concourse, an urban village in the old Sears Tower, will be along in a year or two. $400 million is being pumped into South Main and two residential towers on the river are being built and/or completed. Not to mention Bass Pro and the Pinch. Keep coming back! Memphis is getting better and better.

You can definitely get a lot more bang for your buck way out there.
