RE: Poll on Individual Mandate
A mandate goes against everything America has stood for since 1776. The government was never supposed to have that degree of control over our lives. Freedom is a zero sum game (the people versus the government) and the government is winning. We're all losers.

RE: Poll on Individual Mandate
The crux of this argument centers around the Obamacare provision that requires insurance companies to provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. (As an analogy, you could wait until you have an auto accident to buy a collision policy.) The mandate thus mitigates the pre-existing condition provision, as you would be paying for insurance when you are young/healthy.
Even now this has problems, since under the current law, a young person could pay the fine or tax (thanks Justice Roberts) until they develop cancer, diabetes, etc., and then sign up for a policy and receive coverage.
Ideally, Obamacare could be changed (I'm assuming that it is not going to be overturned) to eliminate the mandate but further stipulate that anyone who chooses to not carry a policy when they are young and/or healthy, would not be able to purchase a policy that covers pre-existing conditions at a later time.

My objection is on principle. The government has no business mandating what goods and services I purchase when it comes to MY body.

RE: Poll on Individual Mandate
I'm open to the concept of individual mandates at the state (non-federal) level. Even at the state level, it would depend on a lot of different variables. At the federal level, I am 100%, automatically opposed to the idea.
On a related point, the crash-and-burn of "single payer" in Vermont over the past few days should give pause to all who wish to impose a more centrally-regimented system of health care on the American people.

Without the individual mandate the ACA doesn't work.

It appears that about 10 million more people are covered this year compared to last and that should go up more in 2015.

What percentage of that 10 million are Medicaid sign-ups or subsidy sign-ups?

Given that two of the key elements of the ACA are expanding Medicaid to cover the working poor and subsidies to make it possible for middle-class workers to afford private individual market coverage I would expect a whole lot of them.

What is your guess, 75%? If all the program is going to be is largely a "government paid for" system, why force everyone else into the system. Just raise taxes on the people that pay taxes to cover the ones can't pay.
