If UAB fans, supporters, or boosters wanted to come watch practices, Gene welcomed them with open arms, and there were always several, if not dozens of people sitting in the stands watching them practice. Haase and his crew, on the other hand, prefer to have closed practices. That I disagree with.

In todays environment where a cell phone can video everything, I would hold closed practices too. Times have changed since Gene coached, there are new challenges. If he were coaching today I bet the only ones allowed in would be big time donors that he knows and trusts.
Scouts use game tapes to scout opposing teams players, and their offenses and defenses, not videos of opposing teams practices. That is a no-no among college coaches. They don't fly in spies to video practices on cell phones. Bartow knew that. He also knew that to generate more interest by donors, the fans, and the students, faculty and especially news media. He kept the doors open to onlookers. Players, themselves, even had a lot of friends on campus who watched practices. It is all about promoting interest. Finally, what difference would it make? Well, basketball players "like to be watched", even in practices. What if their moms or dads or brothers or cousins or classmates or faculty or coaches friends, etc. wanted to go in a watch them practice. Would they be forbidden to do so? When you have been in the business for as long as Bartow had, he knew what was good for the team and was always willing to share the teams to the public with open arms. I think Haase should follow in his footsteps. It doesn't pay to be too secretive, to stay behind close doors and to only open the doors to the public an hour before each game. That is my opinion and I am sticking to it.

I agree, my friends and I would drop by Coach Mike and Davis practices when we were in the area.
Always felt welcome. I understand closing some practices but not as a rule.
Closed practices are usually reserved for sending a message to the team out of the sight of witnesses...after a lack of effort, bad game or attitude adjustments.
My problem with Coach Hasse is his Globetrotter offense, I don't like the half court sets, not enough screening, for so much motion, the offense seems to be designed with Meadowlark or Magic in mind to feed the post or to take it to the cup.

I see the intent after watching it and it works for the youth. It depends so much on shooters getting open, the post being able to pop, feed the post or cutters. which some times lead to not boxing out.

With our youth we are paying the price for this offense with losses, but the experience gained will pay off when it all comes together.

Because it's a no-no among coaches that means they won't do it? You really think Calipari wouldn't do anything he could to win a game or recruiting battle? Get out of here.

In case you missed the memo, Bartow isn't coming back. I get that you have fond memories of him, but every coach and person isn't the same. Perhaps there is a very valid reason for Haase doing things his way?

Most coaches have closed practices. I have no problem with Haase doing it.

Judging by the Haase thread currently going, maybe he closes practices because he doesn't want to give more ammo to his critics.
