Wasn't the NAS responsible for the statue of Blaze, as well...

Yes.

I'm still kind of embarrassed by the statue. All the other signature statues at universities are serious and really well crafted no matter how whimsical the mascot appears to be, but our statue looks like someone started out making a tribute to Reptar and changed it to Blaze at the last minute. I could at least write the tags off as an attempt to look more professional or something, but it's just plain sad that's the statue in front of the building named after the father of UAB athletics.

At least the kids like it, right?

It's a little weird, but I don't hate it like some do.

I don't hate it either, but I think it's a downgrade from the statue it replaced. Given that I thought that one was marginal at best, I think this one is pretty lame. Better than the old one cracking apart in place, mind you, but still not too good.

I'd like to see a bronze statue that has some strength and dignity out in front of the house that Gene built.

But perhaps it best represents the NAS as we know it now. I was hoping that, like Vulcan, the old Blaze statue would be refurbished, improved and reconfigured but with added smoke and fire that worked.

Could some explain how that works? I thought the NAS elected its own officers and I would think that they would be independent of the university.

The day-to-day stuff is taken care of by NAS staff, not the board. I'm not sure how much power the board has.

Does anyone know the internal workings of that organization? I understand that the NAS staff knows where their bread is buttered. However, I am just having trouble understanding why NAS officers elected by the alumni would be beholding to the administration on any issue.

Only thing I could think of is they don't want to get the staff fired if they rock the boat too much.

RE: More BS: Weak NAS statement that echoes Watts...
I could write pages about how the NAS is monumentally incompetent based solely on personal experience. The organization is completely dysfunctional, and Rebecca Watson, the associate vice president for alumni affairs and annual giving, is one of the most incompetent people I've ever met. She has no idea how anything works, and makes excuses for every problem I've ever encountered with alumni affairs.

But, as of late, I've discovered that many UAB areas are operating the same way. Incompetence is starting to permeate the entire university.

That move bothered me ever since I learned of it, but never imagined that it was part of a greater plot against UAB and the city of Birmingham.
