I'm just saying that instead of not filling the seats the combination of the Athletic department (ticket seller) is working with the Alumni Association to get people down there. Yes it will cost the alumni association $45k-$50k of our alumni dues to get the kids down there vs. just eating the tickets at a lesser cost. Go ahead, I didn't put any restrictions on my dues payment, spend away! I'd rather have UT butts in seats vs. the alternative, letting them go empty. The bowl doesn't care who's there, they get their check.

I think everyone wants to have a good showing for the university and for future bowl consideration. The ticket sales would count against our total and the foundation just transfers money from the Alumni Assoc. to the Athletic Dept. for the tickets. Hopefully this is a memorable trip for those 300 kids, and as soon as they graduate they start paying it forward by joining the alumni association. Sadly, I'm pretty sure it will be lost on most of them and they'll just look at it as a great $25 trip to a bowl game and never make the connection that alumni footed the bill.

Jacobs may have been willing to throw around a lot of cash he didn't have, be he's gone. Legislators in Columbus are talking about merging portions of schools to save money.

Fleck has no connections to Western. One or two more good years and he'll make three times that much at a low level Big 10 type school (see Beckman).

According to the article, this extra money comes from donors - his base salary is $225,000. If UT wants to do that, without bigger student fees, then OK. UT could raise $300,000 from donors, but what's the end game?

Detroit, not sure where you got your information on UT debt but UT is in fantastic shape financially with one of the smallest debt loads of any university in the state. It has all been part of Dr. Jacobs plan to renovate instead of brand new buildings. Also my understanding is that Campbell, Cullop, and TK are all under a deferred compensation plan with the UT foundation where they receive a good deal of additional money above and beyond their contracts that is supported by donors.

The UT budget shortfall was $30 million just a couple of years ago. There have been cutbacks in staff and faculty and other areas in an attempt to get it under control.

Ok that is entirely different. UT didn't borrow money to cover that shortfall they made cuts. That is called being responsible and not spending money you don't have like Washington does every day. I know for a fact that UT has a very low debt ratio and has a very solid financial rating from S&P and Moodys. If you want to see some debt go take a look at Northern Illinois and check their financial ratings, by these two rating agencies, which aren't good.

Alumni charter was only 100 seats, and not sure how many are filled. We'll probably do another 1,500 in straight up ticket sales for people finding their own way there. Not sure if we've ever filled our ticket quota (even in Detroit), so why not fill up a bunch of busses with students, charge them $25 so they show up and then basically give them a ticket. Fan plan philosophy. Might as well have butts in the seats vs. eating the tickets.

Toledo always had the fans to "fill" the ticket quota in Detroit. However, the bowl always had Toledo sell the highest price tickets, and fans wouldn't buy them. Rocket fans could buy tickets cheaper online or at the gate. But those purchases were not allowed by the bowl committee to be counted toward the UT ticket quota.

Say 25,000 UT fans attend a bowl in Detroit, but UT had a ticket quota of 15,000 and only sold 10,000 thru the UT ticket office. Toledo would have to eat 5,000 tickets even though it exceeded the required fans by 10,000.

Don't think they ever got up by three scores. Could have if they had not fumbled on the 2 yard line when it was 19-7. Got the safety on next play to go up 21-7 - then never scored again to lose 31-21. I was waiting for that 3 score lead to feel comfortable with the win. Never got it.

If nothing else, he won't need to row the boat anymore. That boat can be outfitted with twin 454 Mercruisers with that salary...

I know fleck didn't fumble the ball on that play and turn it over 6 more times, but garsh darn it, that would have been a crushing blow for niu. You just don't screw up that bad in a championship game.

Before we proclaim PJ Fleck the highest paid coach is there a way for someone to request what the deferred compensation component of Matt Campbell is that is on top of his other compensation which is called the "coaches incentive fund". I know for a fact that this is happening, in fact donations in the past have been earmarked for the foundation to pay these funds to select coaches to keep them around. Several donations have been made toward this fund that MOB started to mirror what Boise State is doing. Here is an excerpt of one of the donations below:

Toledo AD Mike O'Brien introduced two major donors, Chuck and Jackie Sullivan and Roy and Marcia Armes. The Sullivan's were major donors to the renovation of UT's basketball arena (Sullivan Athletic Complex) and donated $1.5 million to the University, half of which will go towards the Larimer renovation. The other portion will go to a coaches incentive fund. Chuck is the former CEO of Interstate Bakeries and a UT graduate.

The same is done for Coach Cullop.

$1.5 million won't throw off that much per year, maybe $50K. Now BG had $20 million donated to the BB program that will generate about $700K per year. That's some money.
