Shameful he isn't eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame. One of those teams should be in the MAC Top 5. And don't forget Miami 1974.
Why is he not eligible?
They almost certainly belong on that list. It's just that so few of us saw them play.
Supposedly you are eligible only if you are a first-team All-American, which Ealey wasn't. Then as now, it would've been extremely difficult for a MAC quarterback to be a first-teamer. Lynch, as you recall, was first-team "Allo-Purpose" player, not a first-team QB.
Chuck Ealey:
1971-
1rst Team All-American (Football News)
2nd Team All-American (UPI}
3rd Team All-American(AP)
8th in Heisman Award
3 time MAC Back of the Year

Hall of Fame Criteria:
FIRST AND FOREMOST, A PLAYER MUST HAVE RECEIVED FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITION BY A SELECTOR RECOGNIZED BY THE NCAA AND UTILIZED TO COMPRISE THEIR CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICA TEAMS.
Doesn't say which are "recognized." Confusing.

Ealey opened up the door for UT's Gene Swick 1975 UPI First Team All-American QB and Sammy Baugh Award Winner. The only MAC QB to be named First Team All-American.
