Yes, surplus. There is no shortage of STEM graduates (although there may be a shortage of STEM talent).

Anecdote on the E:

Friend of mine recently spent time with one of our old engineering professors (we graduated about 6-7 years ago). Professor makes unsolicited comment about how stupid the students are today vs. a few years ago.

It's as if they don't get a good basic educational background in High School....but so many more are getting their HS diplomas, they're obviously ready for college. (This is Memphis, BTW)
