They've always wanted Gitmo back. Cuba has never accepted the nearly 50 years of rent payments the US offers for the base. And if you've the Castro's and got normalized relations for next to nothing, why not try and shoot the moon.

They cashed a check once, but by accident. The Castro regime has nothing to lose here and I don't blame them for trying.

Obama would give Cuba Gitmo in a second if he could.

Cool, had no idea we've had the base rent free for over 50 years.

How’s That ‘Obama Effect’ Working On Cuba?
We haven’t officially normalized relations yet, but Obama’s acting as if we have.
When as the leader of the free world, you indicate to a dictatorship that you don’t give a damn if they oppress their people, then why should they care about stopping? Or for that matter, increasing the oppression?

No, you're right. It's been 50 years but I think our embargo and silly diplomatic ignoring of Cuba was juuuuuuust about to work.
Opening up Cuba and normalizing relations will do more in the next decade to weaken the Cuban government than this embargo did in any of our lifetimes.

I'm with him. The best way to overthrow an oppressive totalitarian government is to show its citizens the benefits of democracy. Change has to come intrinsically, we've already bore witness in our several attempts to apply external pressure to overthrow states and it's been unsuccessful for at least 60 years.

I'm ok with the concept of opening relations with Cuba. The devil is in the details:
What about the 130 escaped American convicts living in Cuba? Will Cuba return those cop killers and mass murderers to us?
What about the assets of American citizens that the communist government seized in 1959?

Probably not, but at least the US is off the hook for being partially responsible for Cuban oppression. Cuban American are becoming irrelevant politically so it's got no downside.

Only one-sided appeasement expected.
