Ok.
The merger was six years ago. Are they locked into promises despite a completely different market?
Well, saying they'd bring more flights kinda means they meant to keep the hub here.
These guys aren't idiots. If the MEM hub was not sustainable for them in the long term, they knew that going in.

RE: Delta - MEM & ORD
There is an actual pilot shortage especially among the contract operators and supposedly even more so for Delta contractors due to some of their guidelines.
High fuel prices did make 50 seaters less economical and they been targeted for phase out. Delta sped up the process, remember Oil's freefall basically just started and there's no certainty of where it will stabilize yet. Bombardier stopped production of their CRJ 200s that held 50, I think Embraer still makes one but the emphasis is on 70 to 90 seats on regional jets going forward, maybe sustained lower oil changes that dynamic. Mitsubishi is entering the RJ market with a 70 and 90 seater soon. Hopefully lower oil leads to start ups or smaller airlines looking to grow to seek places like Memphis to base operations out of due to the dominance of the majors at the major hubs. If it's one thing we have learned, as a business gets so consolidated, alternatives sprout like weeds.
Memphis needs Allegiant and Spirit to set up shop to service the O&D travelers that will be the core of MEM's short and mid term future. they offer cheap, albeit gimmicky, fares to vacation destination spots.
A friend just recently booked a nonstop R/T for 4 from DWF to Tampa for under 300. It's the back way to Disney and Orlando, but his hotel but his airfare, hotel, and car rental was cheaper than three day admission tickets to Universal. Cheap fare airlines would fit Memphis demographics splendidly.
Memphis needs Southwest to start nonstop to Ft. Lauderdale to connect to it's new international hub catering to the island destinations that's under construction like the one in Houston that's catering to the destination south of the border.
Saw that Delta scale back to Orlando coming when Southwest announced the start up of a second, seasonal nonstop to Orlando to supplement the daily nonstop they fly year round. Price has to matter as well as my trip in Feb out of MEM was 400 bucks cheaper via Southwest on the same dates. Delta now basically offers vacationers with kids that want nonstops and no change overs at the zoo that is Atlanta basically 6 night vacations only.
Someone already said United owns Chicago, although Southwest could service that as well.
Delta let AA have Dallas cause it owns DFW, Didn't understand Frontier's 6 day approach to Dallas, then didn't understand pulling the plug so quick considering folks outside of business aren't going to visit Dallas for vacations mainly till summer and then it's mainly weekend types deals.
Something else is going on, seems Frontier is drawing down significantly in Denver, think it's a combination of the new United terms and a change to more point to point flights.

All this bitching and the airlines are posting record profits, some estimates as high as $20B. Lower fuel doesn't mean lower ticket prices.
Supply and demand. They can charge what they want, and folks are buying.

I don't care much for United.
Well aren't you a big shot.
Maybe you should share your experiences and contribute to the thread. If not, I've got enough travel stories for you to lie and say a few are yours.
Being rude and dismissive of people's opinions is never cool, especially when tooting your own horn in the process.
You still haven't shared your experience.
Next.

United owns the market to Chicago anyway.
People need someone to fuss at. I think the local media and City Hall have done a pretty damn good job at throwing all of the blame on Delta. Notice when something goes wrong in Memphis it's typically someone else's fault. I'd love for a city official to say "We dropped the ball. We were naive. We believed billionaires under oath (pretty funny, actually)."
I love how the same people bitching about our government NOW want to ***** at Delta for lying to that government. What the hell did they expect?
