So I guess they're giving away another farm to lure them here. They will run out of farms soon.

Target, Mitsubishi, Electrolux, FedEx, the Peabody, Graceland...I would say that program has brought a lot of jobs to the area.

It's good for the city if true because it makes Memphis look good.

I'd also add that Memphis getting one before Nashville is particularly funny.

But in just about all of these cases (Graceland has yet to be seen), the pros will outweigh the cons, if they haven't already.

The PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) program, as I understand it, allows companies to pay a smaller, set tax rate, for a few years...in theory, the company can afford improvements, and when tax rates return to normal, the improvements actually make their taxes go up, so in the long run, it all works out.

There are differing opinions as to the benefits of the Pilot and other incentives given to private companies. I happen to be one that believes they aren't worth the cost. It appears that some of those incentives may be causing some of the financial decisions made by the council. Those decisions in turn may be causing the exodus of policemen and firemen to other locales. Arguments can be made either way I'm sure.

Pardon me for my ignorance but I just want to make sure I got this straight.

So we are "paying" them by giving them a break on taxes that they wouldn't have been paying anyway if they weren't brought here by the lure of decreased taxes?

Once again, just curious. Not trying to start an argument. Just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

That's just how it sounds to me...may not be explaining it correctly.

Different take on rumor. Same message, though.

RE: Ikea coming here??
The tax incentives can be argued 'til the cows come home. Personally, I think it's a must since cities all across the country do the same.

That being said, I'm interested to take a look inside the store since I've never been in one but have a lot about it.
