Watt's Spies
I received this from someone today who wants to remain anonymous.

This confirms what some of us had suspected. Dr Watts has people (hello to those of you reading this) who are going to meetings to report back to him what is said/who is saying it.

Before some of you question inside information - this comes directly to me from the person in the meeting. That person does not wish to come forward.

--------------
This person was a part of a meeting within the athletics department. Shannon Ealy spoke, people asked lots of questions but obviously he couldn't answer many.

Later Frank Messina spoke and tried to be careful how he worded things. Basically - Watts is not reversing his decision so if we are waiting on this, forget it. Messina asked everyone to send information of inconsistencies to the faculty to make sure that this vote of no confidence sticks. There was other stuff said that doesn't need to be repeated here.

As the meeting ended Frank went up to a guy that had been sitting there and said, "Hey, were you recording?" The guy said, "No, I was just checking my messages." The guy quickly left after that.

Frank asked Shannon Ealy who that was, and Shannon said it was a communications guy from the university. He had been coming around to sit in on athletics meetings. The belief is that he reported back to Watts everything that was said in that meeting.

I would have expected as much from a dictator like Watts. I've felt for a long time that we've had people lurking on these boards. Although there are things that we all would like to know I'm glad that some stuff is going to be held back so that we don't telegraph too much making it harder for the dictator Watts and his PR machine to react.

What does it really say about Watts leadership since he uses spies out there getting information on his "enemies"?

Edit: Its unfortunate that Watts is not going to make this right. I hope that the Faculty Senate lets Watts have in January.

Were they open meetings? If they were, I don't guess the guy did anything wrong in being there. If they weren't shouldn't he have just been asked to leave?

I went to that meeting, and that story sounds pretty accurate. I didn't remember the guy in question after he was gone, but Frank saw the guy using his phone to record things being said. Everyone was surprised.

It's a shameful way for a president to behave. I hope there are no repercussions for Frank.

I don't think the problem is the spy as much as the spymaster. How can he say that he wants to be open going forward and has this kind of thing going on. Is he delusional and actually think that he's going to be able to stay as president?

The meeting was only for people on the athletics advisory board. As for your second question, I think that was Frank's point.

I'm bummed no one has taped any closed-door conversations with Watts. You probably have to be frisked and go through a metal detector before you meet with him now, so it might not be possible anymore. Before the hammer dropped, those recordings would have been a godsend.

But he wasn't asked to leave until the meeting was ending. Why not just ask that he leave prior to that?

Nobody knew who he was except Athletic Dept. staff, which is why Frank was pissed. Everyone assumed that everyone else was a part of the athletics advisory group.

Total amateur hour. If you have deployed spies, you have already lost. Sayonara Ray.

Just man up and do the right thing. Resign tomorrow. Before graduation. Don't F-up 1500 seniors day with a bad memory.

He's not the only one on campus with extra eyes and ears scattered about. We all know somebody on campus, Watts does not know everybody.

WE ARE UAB; we are the folks in the Admin building that mop the floors, the guy that fixes the air conditioner, the painter, that kid that he just walked past, we may even be a cop on the security detail. We are everywhere. These days, everyone has a camera; he seems to have forgotten that.

You would think a guy that has been a research doctor for the past whatever years would be willing to do a little research in this area.

I thought you were quoting Fight Club for a second. No doubt everyone hates this guy.
