Anything that contrasts with Alice Pratt Brown Hall is a good thing. Whoever was involved in the commissioning of that monstrosity should be ashamed.

RE: Drove through campus today
UofChicago recently opened a $35M arts building ( https://arts.uchicago.edu/logan-center/a...gan-center ). The thing I like about it is it's vertical, 9 floors or so, making it one of the tallest buildings on campus. I wish the Moody building was more vertical too -- saves space, nice contrast with the other buildings, etc.
That said, it's very cool that we're getting a top-of-the-line arts building. I always thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits in the one-room Rice Gallery, so I imagine there will be much more of that soon.

FIFY
Our bookstore is unbelievably consistent in their ability to stock nothing of value/decent sizes ever.
To be fair, they did have some nice cycling jerseys for the first time I've ever seen.
I might need to go back.
I also went to Coffeehouse for the first time in years and it was better than I remember. Go figure.

From the drawings, I thought the same thing. Completely out of context as far as the rest of the campus goes.
However, a lot of these things will look better after they are built, landscaped, etc. I'll be really interested to see the finished product. And hoping that the real thing looks better than the renderings we have seen.

Agreed. The Brochstein Pavilion is great and yet is completely out of context in relation to the surrounding buildings.

I think it looks pretty great and I was impressed by the other work found on their website. To each his/her own, I guess. I think the contrast may work well.
Well, it certainly doesn't match, or even blend with, the quad, or the old chem bldg., etc

What are your thoughts on the Brochstein Pavilion?

I'm definitely ok with it. But I just saw it this fall. And briefly. It seems to me that it's definitely designed to be more of an ornament. A contemplative piece. That and it's well landscaped and seems to be delineated to set it apart from the surroundings. I view it like I would an Egyptian obelisk in a Parisian square. Or a Ming vase on the mantle of and Edwardian living room.
Geez. The Archies on this board are probably cringing at these off based remarks... just my own thoughts.

Thank you.
I can imagine those who conjured this monstrosity would be the same ones who walk into a museum and see "art" where everyone with a lick of common sense sees garbage.

Appreciating contemporary art = lacking common sense. Pretty broad strokes you're brushing with there.

I like it. The sharp contrast to other buildings (like how Brochstein is) makes the campus interesting and reflects Houston, with its myriad of inconsistencies and no zoning laws.
Personally, Space science/Bio lab/geology and Lovett and Sid Rich are the true eyesores on campus.

Agree with you & Rice93.
Love the amazing renderings and am very much looking forward to visiting in person, hopefully it will be included in an Alumni College event as soon as its opened.
Hope it grows on those who are less impressed.

RE: Drove through campus today
When looking at archi and art buildings, I generally ignore how well it looks because I just assume it will look goofy. The one thing they need more than most buildings is good lighting, so that affects the design a lot. But, I'd be shocked if any art building built in the last 80 years or so looked as pedestrian as Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
I don't view Arts/Archi buildings in terms of pretty, ugly ... just degree of goofiness.

I'd rather be able to see The Reck. Now that's a beautiful building!

My first thought was that it screams Michael Pollack!

My first thought was Menil. Squat, gray, rectangular. Given Menil's history behind the hedges, I wonder if this is an oblique tribute ?

Yeah, that was my original thought. It looked great being able to see the whole structure from afar.

RE: Drove through campus today
I'm not an immediate fan of this Moody building, based on the renderings. However, that said, I am a fan of Rice deviating from its historical, relentless adherence to the Taco Bell look (that sounds snarkier than I mean it; I like the general Rice look, with the St. Joe brick; I just say "Taco Bell" as shorthand for that kind of Mediterranean style at Rice).
Anyway, my point is, for awhile it seemed like *every* building on campus was going to look basically the same. I'm glad, with Brochstein, that there was some deviation. I like that Moody will also deviate, especially for an arts building, though I do think Moody looks pretty ugly. Brochstein, even when I saw it purely in rendering, looked great to me.
Another quibble with Rice buildings/landscaping. I really wish we'd stop using palm trees. Palm trees look stupid and déclassé, in my opinion. You see them around the pool and around Reckling. I'd rather they use those Cypress trees that are also used in the Academic Quad.

Rice is one of the overall most beautiful university campuses in the country and you think it looks like Taco Bell? There are no words.
