To get away from the political talk, I think this will usher in a time of critical review of the backroom processes that have been going on. My first demands from the next president, though, is having the teams reinstated and increasing transparency in every regard. I've never seen the school so united before, and I'll like the next president to harness this negativity surrounding us right now and foster a greater meshing of relationships between faculty, the student body, alumni, athletics, etc.

UAB needs a fighter. That needs to be on the freaking resume for our next president.

from what I am seeing, the Tuscaloosa campus has about the same division of priorities as UAB has between medical and nonmedical. Their division is between the Athletic Department and the rest of the academic campus. Their Athletic Department is swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck used to do in comic books. They can and do spend $200,000 per athlete per year (at least since 2008) from the AD's office while the rest of the school tries to get by while raising tuition by about 50% (with more raises to come and UAB will share) over the same period.

They cover any bad news from campus by the bravado of their NCs in football since spending about $13,000 per regular student and the (needed) influx of out of state students to fill their classes is not widely discussed. Where did their various academic programs rank nationally lately? Are they in anyone's Top 10 like in athletics? If some of those hundreds of millions their AD sits on every year could be shared with the rest of the school, they might be able to get by without all those tuition hikes.

Three things that people of all political stripes can agree on. I'm talking to my state senator and state representative and they have been very responsive. I don't give a flip what their stances are on other issues. If they can help us to get our football program back they will get my support and my vote the next time they run for reelection.

So, who is responsible for hiring this next president, assuming Watts leaves? SOS. I suspect the next president might be even more incompetent and neutered. We missed the opportunity to save our coach and program. Now the question is whether we devolve back to a commuter school before there is BOT reform.

Getting rid of Watts will prove the easy part. We'll have to work harder now than before. The board and our legislators need to know we will be watching the next president search VERY closely.

They need to be made clear that the next president MUST be someone the UAB community can rally around (that can be code for whatever you want it to).

This will be the time the dragon must roar.
