Report: Pitt Paul Chryst poised to become Wisconsin next HC
From the article:

Madison – Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez wasted little time in identifying, pursuing and securing a a head coach to replace for Gary Andersen.

According to a source close to the UW program, former UW assistant Paul Chryst is poised to return to his alma mater.

“I thought this would be the scenario from Day 1,” the source told the Journal Sentinel. “He will put together a good staff.”

Chryst is in his third season as head coach at Pitt. His overall record is 19-19 but he inherited a mess from former coach Todd Graham and instituted a new offensive system.

Chryst makes perfect sense for Wisconsin.

A Madison native, former QB and long time assistant at Wisconsin. This is not a guy who will bolt for another school in 2 years. He has come home and will want to stay home.

Meanwhile Michigan is still dragging its feet hiring a new coach. I wonder what the problem is. Are there no big names that want the job?

Pitt and Houston will be without head coaches in their bowl game.

Michigan has become a coaching graveyard.

I feel bad for Pitt. How many head coaches will they have lost in the last few years if it happens?

Michigan can't talk to their number one choice until the NFL season is over. Even if it's unlikely Jim Harbaugh comes to Michigan, they need to at least have the conversation and make an offer. The fan base expects nothing less. That can't happen until December 28th at the earliest. Once Harbaugh officially turns them down, then the search can proceed at full speed. The lack of a permanent AD doesn't help matters either.

Never feel bad for Pitt. They were working behind the scenes with the ACC and then stabbed the Big East in the back. All while they were in charge of keeping the Big East unified.

Overall I think Chryst was a good hire for Pitt to get things stable again. If they make the right hire they can get back to their success from the later Wannstedt years or even better. They're an easy sell with excellent facilities, recruiting hotbed, tradition, and a current roster with NFL talent.

Yes...much more important to get the hire right in regards to Michigan then to rush it...talk to Harbaugh when the 49ers season is over...if he says no then talk to IMO Dan Mullens.

About the same number as Wisconsin. At least this time it's happening above board. Nothing like the Todd Graham situation. I think Pitt fans will be a bit more understanding here, too. Can't really fault a guy for wanting to go home to coach at his alma mater. And he's leaving the program in a better state than when he arrived.

What he means "From Day 1" is actually Day 1 after Bielema's departure. Contracts and all that....

Don't listen to all the folks wanting to display their hatred. Michigan would have a coach announced already in comparable speed to what we are seeing at Wisconsin if they didn't already have something up their sleeve. Money talks and Michigan has lots of it. It is a top job.

As I have said before, the longer it drags out then the more obvious it becomes that Harbaugh is the guy. It is a common thing to do to deny such reports because Harbaugh is still at San Fran and he is still trying to do his job there. San Fran has him under contract for one more year and they aren't letting him out of it without a trade. That isn't going to happen. His only way out if he wants out of San Fran, which he does, is by retiring and going back to a college coaching position.

Despite what people who hate Michigan might say, I am no fan of Michigan by far, it is a top landing spot for anyone. Harbaugh would turn that program around and truly give Meyer and Dantonio a run for their money. Why? Because he would take Michigan back to their roots with a pocket passing style quarterback.

It will be great to see the two contrasting styles again of what Ohio State has become under Meyer and what Michigan would be under Harbaugh.

Pelini is a good choice, but I don't think that should be Pitt's fist choice. The following coaches I would go after before Pelini.

1. Memphis - Fuente great young coach with a bright career. His work at Memphis has been impressive.
2. Doc Holiday - May be his last shot at P5. Knows the recruiting area well. Excellent coach.
3. Ga Southern - Fritz, it would be another Paul Johnson offense, but it works.
4. NIU - Carey, kept NIU going strong.
5. Skip Holtz - A coach I think does another shot at a P5 school.

Initial opinion is this is not a great hire by Wisconsin. "Stabilized" Pitt? Yea, at three straight 6-6 regular seasons and 10-13 in commerce games. Meh.

Skip Holtz? Really? Has he ever lost fewer than five games in a season as a head coach in the FBS? It's saying a lot when your own father fires you as an assistant coach.

I think he'll do fine if he just does as Alvarez wants. Most coaches would want more freedom but maybe Chryst is fine with doing things Barry's way.
